I noticed both the MAD spoof of JAWS revisited and the LIFE look at Van HaleN on the magazine racks of late and thought of the following LIFE look at JAWS which appeared within its "The year in pictures" in 1976:  This outtake's scene was said to have been cut from JAWS for being too "terrifying", but I wonder if it actually was simply a case of "Bruce" being uncooperative. |

I'd go with the Bruce being uncooperative reason. I understand he was all too often uncooperative during filming. And if seeing a severed leg hit the bottom of the water wasn't considered "too terrifying" to leave in the movie, I hardly think the photo you posted would be considered more so.

Yesterday I picked up LIFE's fiftieth celebration of THE EXORCIST off the newsstand:  Interestingly, neither of the pair of photos which were used for their "The year [1974] in pictures" issue - including a color outtake which jazzed this then-kid - were culled for the above issue. |
