I don't really see Van Heflin as a sexy romantic lead. He would not have been my casting choice for this role. He's a fine actor and he's very good in his scenes with Joan, but I don't see any huge spark or reason for her to be mad about him. I agree in this one so far, but in "East Side, West Side" I thought he and Stanwyck had a strong spark and, in that one, Heflin was fine as a romantic lead. It's a movie-to-movie thing. John Garfield, who played a musician in HUMORESQUE with Crawford, would have been my choice here. Maybe Garfield turned it down and that's why they borrowed Heflin from MGM.

When she confronts Heflin on the patio and melts down is the first time she shows us she's unhinged.

Cold black water. The transitions are great.
Curtis Bernhardt, the director, did such a good job with his cinematographer Joseph Valentine.

____________ I agree, I thought his best chemistry was with Lizabeth Scott in "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers."

Geraldine Brooks who plays Raymond Massey's daughter, became lifelong friends with Crawford. She spoke at Crawford's memorial service in 1977.

I thought she was adorable in the scene where she's wearing the striped pajamas and talking about being tingly all over from the pine tar soap. Hee.
