One of my favorite things about the era from the '20s - '50s are street cars/trolley/trams. I loved that even small cities had them and I wish they were still a thing. And yes, when I visit a city, if they have one, I ride on it like a kid. One day, I might visit LA simply to ride on the Angel Flight funicular.

Her husband's name is not David. It's Dean.

This opening sequence is a fantastic way to hook the audience in the first ten minutes for the rest of the story.

Frustrated. That's her diagnosis, frustrated and catatonic and terrified of her mean doctors.

The rolled bangs are not her best look. Makes her look a bit harsh (which is not something that needs to be emphasized with her).

David's not quite a cad, but he's not exactly the most selfless loving man either.
Feeling sorry for poor Louise.

I agree about the hair, it looked so pretty from the back and then she turned around and had that big lump of bangs.

Feeling sorry for poor Louise. True, but as presented here and as you said, he's not a cad and seems like he didn't lie to her or lead her on. She just fell hard and he didn't. None of that makes it less sad for the person in love.

Quite the world where people go from house to house in speed boats.

I don't really see Van Heflin as a sexy romantic lead. He would not have been my casting choice for this role. He's a fine actor and he's very good in his scenes with Joan, but I don't see any huge spark or reason for her to be mad about him.

I agree in this one so far, but in "East Side, West Side" I thought he and Stanwyck had a strong spark and, in that one, Heflin was fine as a romantic lead. It's a movie-to-movie thing.
