Some background on this week's melodrama:
Joan Crawford had intended to buy the rights to 'Daisy Kenyon' since it was a book she enjoyed reading and she could envision herself playing the role, though in the story, Daisy was somewhat younger than Crawford who'd just hit menopause. However, 20th Century Fox beat her to it, so she waged a campaign with her boss Jack Warner to loan her to Fox so she could still play the part, even if she'd have to work under director Otto Preminger.
Both Crawford and Preminger had fiery personalities and were considered a tad tyrannical. Would they come to blows? No, surprisingly they got along very well and years later, Crawford said the film's success was largely due to how Preminger had directed it.
Leading men were played by Dana Andrews and Henry Fonda. Fonda had a better career, but at this point, Andrews was red hot after his work in LAURA and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. So he is billed over Fonda. This would be Fonda's last film under his contract to Fox; the actor would start to freelance but then was grey listed so he didn't make any movies between 1948 and 1955.
Costar Ruth Warrick said because Crawford was going through menopause and suffering from hot flashes, it was in Crawford's contract that the soundstage be kept at a very cool temperature. The male costars wore long johns under their trousers, and Miss Warrick wore a fur coat between takes to stay warm!

Your recount made me think of frigid going for THE EXORCIST cast/crew: If I correctly recall reading, Linda Blair is said to have loathed being cold thereafter, TopBilled.

Notice how he comes in and pours some coffee. This was added, because the production office had objected to there being too many scenes with characters drinking alcohol.
