I have a GOODHOUSING COOKBOOK from 1950. Included is a section how to set a table for buffets, various formal occasions, etc. which is useful, but the instructions are laced with "the perfect hostess" comments. I love showing that to people-hours of entertainment.

Is there such a thing as a life-long "good housewife" in this day and age? Any woman can pretend to be - for a time.
Seems like it would be a very, very rare woman who would choose to be that for life in the poor or middle-classes anymore.
Upper classes can afford extraordinary services, so privileged women like that wouldn't qualify as "housewives" in the definitive sense.
1 in a thousand? 1 in a million? Or are there more than that?
I'll guess 1 in a thousand for Democrats; 1 in a hundred for Republicans.

by "good housewife" do you mean one who has no activities outside of the house? With all the appliances, kits for making meals, electronic shopping, and particularly when the kids have moved out, there isn't that much to do around the house.
Not sure why the political party is a factor.

For the first few tips I was thinking, awww, I guess there's nothing wrong with trying to make someone else happy, particularly if he's out working some job like road maintenance in Vermont all day to support the family, but then they started to lose me and by the time we got to "the good wife knows her place," I was wondering if the whole thing was made up.

Yep. 99.9 percent of today's women won't be accepting any role of "good housewife".
Our great-grandmothers are all dead now. For all intents and purposes, that's all over.
