Coming out at the end of the year, an origin story of Willy Wonka. Starring Timothée Chalamet, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, and Olivia Colman.
"From Paul King, writer/director of the “Paddington” films, David Heyman, producer of “Harry Potter,” “Gravity,” “Fantastic Beasts” and “Paddington,” and producers Alexandra Derbyshire (the “Paddington” films, “Jurassic World: Dominion”) and Luke Kelly (“Roald Dahl’s The Witches”), comes an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, all told with fabulous heart and humor. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time—proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible."
I always found the Gene Wilder 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory rather creepy. The Johnny Depp's Wonka movie was just too damn much. I don't think Chalamet has the needed charisma or quirkiness needed for the role. Are people clamoring for more Wonka movies? We'll see. I will say it's nice to see a family movie coming out around the holidays, though.

It seems to spring from the thought of remaking films and endless sequels. During Covid I started reading books about making movies, bios, etc The books told about research for what audiences want and previews in representative cities with the comment cards for reactions like I've seen in some old films. I guess those went out first with the cost cutting and I sometimes wonder if paying screenwriters went next. To your point, I wonder if kids today know Willie Wonka, must seem tame compared to the super hero films if they do.

The Flash was a huge flop this summer. As for endless sequels, the recent unnecessary Indiana Jones movie was not well received either. They should have left it as a trilogy. Bringing in River Phoenix as a young Indy and Sean Connery as his father was perfect. I think audiences are tired of these retreads. The new Mission Impossible movie has gotten very good reviews but that's more like the Bond series, with new installment with each movie. I might go see that one. Tom Cruise, nuttiness aside, knows how to make popcorn movies for the big screen. There are a few original movies on the horizon that look promising like Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, Killers of the Flower Moon by Scorsese, and Napoleon by Ridley Scott.
