Polly wants her cake and to eat it too. She wants to be married to a "radical," but live like a plutocrat.

I think B.F. stands for Big Fish.

That was a nasty thing Wynn's character did telling Heflin that Polly used B.F.'s money to back his lecture tour.

"To B.F., from whom all blessings flow."
Here here.
Mother: "That was sweet, Tom."

So whose side is the viewer supposed to be on?
Tom's or B.F.'s?

As Topbilled noted, BF is a self-made man and he fights like one. He didn't inherit his wealth; he made it and he's not embarrassed by it as so many who've inherited wealth are.

Tom's or B.F.'s? That's what I love about this movie (and the book, I read it a few years ago), it's balanced, like real life is.

B.F. is sick.
Now we are really getting into the Father Melodrama part of the movie.

B.F. isms
"I've been a builder. The world needs builders. Planners too. But always builders."
"Marriage is like a business, Polly...an investment."
"It's better to fight."

Notice how much nicer Heflin's clothes are now that he's a successful speaker and in the Administration.

I wonder if this film would have done better at the box office, if they had cast Fred MacMurray instead of Van Heflin.
Just a thought...

Just a thought... Maybe, but I think Heflin is doing an excellent job.

Just a thought... Maybe, but I think Heflin is doing an excellent job. I agree...Heflin is a fine actor. But I don't think he was seen as a leading man the way Fred MacMurray and James Mason were. Heflin didn't have the same sort of box office clout.
In fact, this film might have been a little more ironic if they had used Stanwyck's husband, Robert Taylor, since their marriage was the opposite...Taylor was from a wealthy background, and Stanwyck had worked her way up from nothing.

These military scenes slow the film down. I would have eliminated some of this.
I suppose it is important in the book, and we need to know Bob is off at war. But...

Wynn's character is so obnoxious. He's always so sure he's so right. He'd be perfect on Twitter.
