Spring and Port Wine (1970). Set in Manchester, the film follows the life of a working class family. It stars James Mason as the stern patriarch and includes Susan George as his rebellious daughter. The family all lives in respectful fear of Mason, including his loving wife who works hard to make a good home for her family on their small income. There's the oldest daughter, a school teacher, who is reluctant to leave home and marry her boyfriend. The oldest son who seems content to live at home and eat mum's cooking. Susan George as the younger sister testing the rules and a likeable younger boy who lugs a cat around and just wants everyone to get along.
I've never even heard of this movie but it reminded me of The Family Way. I always enjoy James Mason who is doing something a little different here playing a working class father. There's a nice ending where Mason tells his wife that his troubled childhood is the reason he's so strict at home. He wanted to give his children the stable home life he never had. This came out in 1970 so there's the element of the old fashioned notions of the parents butting heads with the more progressive, modern ways that his children, especially the daughters. Good movie. One caveat, it took a while for me to get used to their Northern accents.
Anyone else see this on TCM recently?

Sounds like an interesting one...something that would be my cup of tea. LOL 👍 Hard to go wrong with James Mason! Based on a work by Bill Naughton who wrote who made Alfie and ... The Family Way. Not quite as good as those two but worth a look. It's not on Watch TCM or whatever they call it. However, I noticed while searches for it alphabetically that TCM has all the movies that start with "The" under "T." 😒
