"Catherine, dear child, please take hold of yourself. Morris had his heart set on 30, not 10."
Right. It is almost as if she is perhaps a bit autistic, not fully comprehending the games people play.

Boy what a long night's journey into day - horrible. And a journey into the rest of her life as a spinster.
What a sad, pitiful life Catherine Sloper leads.

$10,000 in 1900 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $361,146.43 And that was every year.
Morris is a greedy guy.

Right. It is almost as if she is perhaps a bit autistic, not fully comprehending the games people play. It's interesting you say this...I was thinking she had a bit of Asperger's Syndrome. But maybe it's really mild autism.

Boy what a long night's journey into day - horrible. You are so right. First the Father told her how little he thought of her and then Morris left her when she didn't have the $30k, who could take, as you perfectly said, such a "long night's journey."

Morris is a greedy guy. He wanted the full $1,000,000 a year. Monty was too greedy. He wasn't willing to strike a fair tradeoff, a tradeoff that has led to many happy marriages.
The father wasn't wrong, but he's still a b*stard.

And don't forget that her Aunt also turned on her, showed her true colors. Devastating night of loss.

This last half hour is my favorite part of the film, where she finally gets some backbone.
Olivia really does a fine job with the transformation, so deserving of the Oscar.

Yes, Catherine certainly has found her tongue at last. "If I'm to buy a man I'd rather it was Morris."

I can't get passed the father's crushing speech to his daughter. Just brutal.

I can't get passed the father's crushing speech to his daughter. Just brutal. Mmmm yes, hard to believe someone as smart and charming and adept at all social graces as he would take such a tactless approach to tackling the problem. Who just exactly is the bigger cad?

Can't he notice that she can't even stand to kiss him?

I think she's right not to trust Morris, now back and pleading for forgiveness.

Fool me once indeed. It is odd she hasn't moved on....with all her money and new found spirit. Years of not going to Newport have passed.
