The father, in this meeting with Monty's sister, seems to be conducting genuine due diligence.

I love how auntie forgot she had a headache when Catherine went to tell her about the proposal.

Catherine is so socially inept and shy...you would think she was raised inside a convent!

The father is passive aggressive and hard on his daughter, but I think he is genuinely trying to protect his daughter.
I think he genuinely believes he's doing the right thing for his daughter.
I don't remember feeling that way about him the last time I saw this movie.

This line about the gloves Morris wears...like he's a metrosexual before that word was in vogue.

"He will take good care of Catherine and her money." Exactly. I agree her father means well, but what better plan does he have for his daughter's future?

Morris thinks that offering tenderness and devotion is all that's required, and he will deserve a claim on Catherine's fortune. He's actually very misguided.

Every time the theme song plays, I see heavy Elvis in a white rhinestone-studded jumpsuit belting out "I can't help falling in love" in my head.

I think his idea is that the right one will come along maybe a bit later, and that Morris definitely is not the right one. His daughter should not marry an opportunist.

It is odd the good doctor has never helped her to find someone to marry before now. Would he approve of anyone one wonders?

One wonders if he wants to keep his daughter his companion for life

It is odd the good doctor has never helped her to find someone to marry before now. Would he approve of anyone one wonders? Probably if this were made later (after the production code) there would be some overt Oedipal themes presented, where the father sees the daughter as a replacement wife after the mother died. So the father would be coveting Catherine for himself.
But in this case, I think it is that he is over protective...and he has a certain idea in mind of the type she should marry. And that her having no one until then, is better than having Morris and the trouble he will bring.
