a horrible horrible Burt Reynolds movie. I downloaded hoping that maybe some parts would be amusing but no. whatta awful misfire for Hal Needham. I think he was trying for a NASCAR-themed Smokey and the Bandit. the movie is totally unfunny. Burt Reynolds had the ability to be ingratiating as these types of characters but here even he fails. he tries but there is just too much of Needham's stupidity working against him. the film opens with a useless intro a flashback to the 1930s with a young stroker his friend and his father being chased by the cops on a southern highway. this intro is totally uncute and lacks any poignance whatsoever. the Bandit was a winner with women and cars but this guy stroker can't seem to get into gear. women seem uninterested and he lets an infinitely forgettablr parker stevenson give him competition. what was the matter with Needham here? he's got Burt playing a bumbling loser here. the movie keeps reminding us throughout that this chucklehead is supposed to be a 3-time NASCAR racing champion which seems to be the first thing that Needham forgets. this film killed the smokey and the bandit genre. everyone in this is unfunny. the only nearly funny scene is an injured stroker pulling himself on the floor with a sprained foot. lol. ned beatty as torkle is wasted. he has a black man friday who seems to have no purpose in the film. anyone who can figure out why Jim Nabors is in this tell me. only reason I can think of is he saw it has an opportunity to hit on Burt. Loni Anderson? I've never seen a woman with such gaunt eye sockets...or is that makeup?
