After 250+ episodes of Noir Alley, I was wondering if there are any ‘great’ film noir movies that Eddie has not featured yet. To answer this question, I started with a list of film noir movie titles on IMDB:
www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&genres=film-noir&ref_=adv_prv
This list is initially sorted by ‘popularity’, which I believe indicates how often the page for the film has been viewed, regardless of its rating.
There are a total of 982 films included in this list. I looked at the first 200 films and then compared these titles with those that have been shown on Noir Alley. There were a few titles in the list from the 1930’s that I eliminated because Eddie does not normally consider films prior to the 1940s.
This produced a list of 86 popular titles that have not been shown on Noir Alley yet. I then sorted these titles by IMDB rating to find the ‘best’ films. In this system, a score of 8 is an outstanding film, 7 is very good and so on.
Of the films at the top of the list, there are some I would say are "too popular for Noir Alley", meaning they are of such high regard that they are regularly shown on TCM. Sunset Blvd, The Night of the Hunter, The Lost Weekend, Laura, To Have and Have Not, etc. would fall into this category. It would be nice, however, to get Eddie's take on them. There is also a consideration of whether TCM can readily acquire the film to be shown. The Hitchcock films Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound, for example, have not been shown on TCM in several years and seem to be more difficult now for TCM to lease. (They would probably be considered "too popular" for Noir Alley if TCM should be able to show them again.) Films from studios other than Warner Brothers, MGM, and RKO are typically more difficult for TCM to acquire.
