I'm way out of my league here because of my lack of familiarity with so many of these films, but initially I had fun making (un)educated guesses about movies with provocative titles like Warners' Loose Ankles and Fox's On Your Back. On further investigation, On Your Back refers to the heroine's theory that women should show their taste on their backs, in other words through their wardrobe choices. Loose Ankles was an early Loretta Young romantic comedy. The title is still unclear to me, though my initial assumption was that it was some kind of colloquialism akin to "round heels". This is pre-Code after all. MGM's Anna Christie was a big step for them, letting one of their biggest stars off the leash a little. Warners' Moby Dick made me smile because that's the one where they gave John Barrymore's Ahab a girlfriend, Joan Bennett. Artistic license or just plain silly? Paramount's Morocco I immediately recognized but was a bit surprised to remember it was from this early because of its overall visual polish. The one which jumped out the most was The Big Trail, Raoul Walsh's epic western for Fox, filmed in a 70 MM process which Fox was experimenting with at the time. I'm not sure how it was actually shown in local theaters which had only recently borne the cost of converting to sound, but it seems to have been a hit. Not to mention John Wayne's stunning good looks at that age. This role as a frontiersman probably helped set him up as a major western star during the 1930's. This still is a good representation of the aspect ratio, something not seen again for a couple of decades:

This still is a good representation of the aspect ratio, something not seen again for a couple of decades: Several years backed I wrote the following few bullets on the movie "Loose Ankles:""Loose Ankles" 1930 staring Loretta Young and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. ---Really early pre-code talkie still finding its technological way but fascinating for its modern feel as two young party girls don't care about what the adults / society say about them - they feel like modern "screw authority" teenagers
---"Loose Ankles" seems to have been a term for sex in general, but (based on some web searching) also a description of wanton / "easy" woman - cool phrase
---Loretta Young was seventeen when this was made and looks as if she was beamed in from a world of perfectly smooth, lit-from-behind glowing skin and incredibly lithe young women - life has not yet left One. Single. Mark. at seventeen.

One thing that stood out is how, despite being kinda/sorta the first full year of talkies, there were several classics made.
In addition to the Oscar winners - "All Quiet on the Western Front," "The Divorcee" and "Disraeli -" "Dawn Patrol" (the earliest version of "Twelve O'Clock High") and "Anna Christie" are both, I believe, considered classics (and maybe I missed one or two).
Plus there were more than a handful of other movies made in 1930 that are really entertaining even to this day. That's not bad for the first year of talking pictures when the technology was still a mess and everyone was, effectively, learning a new way to make pictures.

Haven't perused this whole magnificent list yet, but the first film is a favorite. Applause is a great film, full of Mamoulian's innovation and (I think) one of the first talkies to be shot on location in New York City. And those shabby, chubby chorus girls at the top of the film, with their wrinkled tights, are quite engaging, as they sing a version of "The Oceana Roll" that I prefer to Jane Powell's slick (though enjoyable) version in that feel good pastel-coloured movie, Two Weeks with Love (1950). And Mamoulian knew how to use a camera, which makes this one of the best of the early talkies. I love the scene when the chorus girls go backstage to see the newborn. Beautifully shot, from above, and then from below.
And Helen Morgan!
