TMC played a couple of musical shorts before this Saturdays (11-29-22) Noir Alley. One from Gene Krupa and another form Cab Calloway. Most of us have seen Cab Calloway's Mini the Moocher, but this Gene Krupa Let Me Off Uptown was AWESOME!

Krupa had a great band! Anita, who was always outstanding, is joined on vocals by star trumpeter Roy Eldridge.
I always enjoy the appearance of Krupa and his band in Ball of Fire, although Anita had to step aside there and let Barbara Stanwyck pretend to be the band’s singer. (I love Barbara, but she’s no Anita when it comes to singing.)

YES! Babs does an outstanding job on Drum Boogie.
Sal Mine did a pretty good job in The Gene Krupa Story too!

I think seeing The Gene Krupa Story on TV when I was very young was the first time I’d ever heard of Krupa (or Sal Mineo, for that matter). Movie bios like this one or The Glenn Miller Story were my first exposure to the big band era’s music, which has become a favorite genre of mine all these years later.

Have you seen the 1941 Sonja Heine movie "Sun Valley Serenade," in which Glen Miller and his band play an integral part of the story and perform several numbers? As a big-band fan myself, it's one of my favorite movies as the plot is silly, but fun, Heine is enjoyable and Miller and his music are outstanding. Miller's numbers in the movie are like MTV videos forty years before MTV.

I especially enjoy the way that “Chattanooga Choo Choo” begins so casually, with the Modernaires playing cards during the rehearsal when Tex Beneke strolls over and starts singing. And the Nicholas Brothers with Dorothy Dandridge are also a real treat.
If you like Sun Valley Serenade, you might try Orchestra Wives (if you haven’t already seen it), also with the Miller band and co-starring Ann Rutherford.

My trigger was The Benny Goodman Story (1956) back in college. And I had the LPs of his 1938 jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in my possession within a week of seeing it.

My fondness for this music formed when I learned how to operate the old "phonograph" we had and then finding my Mom's collection of old "swing era" and "big band" 78s. Sepiatone
