Recently I have re-watched CAINE MUTINY, SOLDIER OF FORTUNE, and LADY IN THE LAKE. Tully is one of those proficient character actors who can make something of the smallest parts.
Anyone who watches the old DICK VAN DYKE shows, he played Rob Petrie's father in a couple of episodes.
I don't think Tully could lead a tv comedy show, but he would have been a great regular. As example, check out JUNE BRIDE. Bette Davis the successful women's magazine editor. Robert Montgomery a war correspondent without a job because there are two many reporters after the war. He takes job as writer for Davis's feature, June Bride.
Tully plays store owner in Indiana whose daughter has been chosen as the June issue bride. He seems the rational person bewildered by all the strange New Yorkers, he's very amiable. If you haven't seen JUNE BRIDE, stick with it to watch his reaction to Davis and Mary Wickes' discussion of his wife's bust.
Tully doesn't seem to stand out amongst all the actors he performs with. He appears to be an actor who is a team player, not needing to be the center of attention.
He went to Vietnam as part of the USO, got some sort of virus or parasite and had to have his leg amputated. He continued to appear on tv afterwards, primarily in westerns.

I tend to enjoy his more serious roles; E.g. As the father of Gene Tierney in the noir Where The Sidewalk Ends. As the father of Barbara Bel Geddes and Phyllis Thaxter in the noir western Blood on the Moon. The police captain in the noir Lady in the Lake. etc..
