My sister called me saying she bought 2 Lionel Barrymore Gold Prints at a local auction. She paid $20 for the pair. They are framed sketches of what looks like a seaside town. The paper is gold colored. They are signed by Lionel Barrymore. I told my sister that I didn't now anything about Barrymore being an artist but that I would post here. I'm not finding any real info online but I see other similar works of art by him. I did find a book called Gold-Etch Prints Set of Four Lionel Barrymore. The description reads, "In recent years the discoveries and publication of etchings created in his life bring forth yet another of his talents. His work in this field is preciously limited as the originals from which these were reproduced were discovered recently among his personal effects by a long-time friend and associate. Truly a prize among a collection of art treasures."
I just wondered if anyone had any more information or the backstories on his artwork. Thanks for your help TCM fans!

I've heard of many actors also paint, but not Barrymore. Sorry can't give new information. I know there is a book, possibly printed in the '80s about the Barrymore family. It'll be a few weeks before I go, but will see if there is any info at the library.

I doubt the pictures are worth much more than she paid for them but it seems like an odd medium, gold print. We'd like to know more.

I watched a biography about the Barrymores with Gary Sinise. He did go to Paris to be an artist and Ethyle supported financially. He felt bad about it so he went for acting.

Didn't know that about Lionel. Here's a little more: "Barrymore had attended art school in New York and Paris and was a skillful graphic artist, creating etchings and drawings and was a member of the Society of American Etchers, now known as the Society of American Graphic Artists. For years, he maintained an artist's shop and studio attached to his home in Los Angeles. Some of his etchings were included in the Hundred Prints of the Year.". "Today, his works are held in the collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others."
