Poor George Brent, star of today's MY REPUTATION. Ben and guest Mario Cantone are presenting the Mother's Day films. And before going into George-why these guys? Why not one woman to present a film with the woman's point of view about the mother?
Poor George, Ben and Mario complain that Maj. Landis should have bee played by someone with more flash, men like John Wayne, Burt Lancaster. Would have ruined the film for me. George is the perfect Maj. Landis. He's the man I'd marry. May fantasize about the forceful he-men, but marry the "my way or the highway" the "jump to it" narcissist-no, there would be blood in my relationship with such a man. In films like THE GREAT LIE and MY REPUTATION, it's got to be a man who can lead, who can make a decision, but not domineer.

Maybe they should make George Brent Star of the Month and go through his entire filmography.
I agree with you that he's just fine in this film...
Incidentally, MY REPUTATION fits Christmas and New Year's Eve better than it does Mothers Day since those two December holidays are featured in the story.

I think the two men did a disservice to George Brent, as well. He was a good compliment to actresses with strong screen presences. He worked well alongside Davis, Stanwyk, Astor and Hopkins, just to name a few. He also had an easy going screen personality which made him seem like a real character, rather than just an actor.

Yes, Brent was a good compliment to such actresses and an actor with a more well defined\stronger screen persona can often conflict with such an actress since the plot is built around the actress. What we will never know is the "what if": E.g., if another actor with a different screen persona was cast in a film like The Great Lie where Astor and Davis dominate the film (Astor even more than Davis which is unusual in itself). My gut tells me Brent was the right choice for the role. Take another film with Stanwyck, East Side \ West Side: The actors are Van Helfin and James Mason. While Brent was at the same star "status" as those actors I don't think he would have worked half as well as those actors in either role.

They really should have had Alicia take care of Mothers Day. And Sunday afternoon is one of her regular days anyway. I was looking forward to her doing it. I think George Brent is fine and so already pointed out works very well with all the actresses especially the strong ones. And what was additionally pointed out this is a movie that is best shown Christmas and New Years.

My understanding is that, traditionally, Mothers Day tribute host are sons while Fathers Day tribute host are daughters. I.e. someone that by default can't be part of the tribute. Thus I assume if there is a Fathers Day host it will be Alicia.
