It's frustrating not knowing all languages. I recorded SEVEN SAMURAI and other foreign film so I can watch twice. When reading English subtitles, I miss some of the visual of the scene. If the film is dubbed and I can watch the visual, I feel I miss the actor's characterization. I assume how an actor speaks is part of the character development and I assume the person dubbing may not read the character the same way. It would be wonderful to know dozens of languages.

I have routinely gone back to watch non-English language films (without subtitles) to absorb their aesthetic elements fully. That said, I have fewer problems in the vein of art house cinema, where dialogue is sometimes more sparse, and the visuals tell us even more about it thematically than dialogue. It all depends on the film.
