One of Warners' best from cclanetemp on the IMDb
The picture is one of the most heartwarming of the era and is very deftly directed and acted. There are plenty of opportunities for the picture to become mawkish, but it never does. It stars Fay Bainter in a role that would garner her an Academy Award nomination for best actress (she won best supporting that year for JEZEBEL). Claude Rains, her costar, is as impressive as ever and the other members of the cast are all top-flight. It was especially good to see Kay Johnson again. Jackie Cooper and Bonita Granville were very winning teenagers. And last, let us not omit Max Steiner's rich score.
Small picture telling a big story from arturus on the IMDb
This is a small masterpiece, well written, nicely and realistically produced on a small scale, leaving room for the largeness of the story and its message about faith and true character, which both seem to be lacking in modern life. The acting is the most outstanding element in this dated but beautiful piece.
Fay Bainter was a renowned stage actress of her time and if you only know her later character work on film, you wouldn't suspect it. Here, she shines brightly and gives a touching, riveting performance. It's clear why she was so revered! I kept watching just waiting for her next scene to see what she would do with it.
Claude Rains of course was the most famous and accomplished character actor of his time and he takes this character and makes him his own. Though Rains was English, as the character is not, he makes no effort to hide his British accent. Still, we believe him. Bonita Granville and Jackie Cooper are splendid as the two youngsters.

This one sounds great. I had never heard of it before, but now can't wait to see it on Sunday.

Yet another solid effort by the Warner Bros. studio contract team starting with all the actors, to the director, (Goulding), to Steiner, etc... (with young actor Jackie Cooper being an exception, but Granville was under contract with the studio). Just the right amount of sedimentarily and warmth without going overboard.

Nice comments. It's a winner.
WHITE BANNERS aired 19 times on TCM between 1994 and 2007...however, it ran into legal problems, which is why it has not aired since or ever been issued on DVD.
Fortunately there is an upload at the Russian site which we can watch on Sunday.

Legal problems: I really wonder what they are since I don't see any songs or other possible disputed content in the film that would lead to such problems. Anyhow, now I know why TCM haven't shown the film since 2007 during Oscar month or as part of their WB tribute in April. Funny but when I first saw the above photo, I didn't think it was Granville. Instead, I wondered why the young girl was made-up with a long and very pointed nose. Yea, her hair makes it look like she has a nose prosthetic that was later used by Margaret Hamilton.

Perhaps there are legal issues with the estate of Lloyd C. Douglas, the author whose book was the source material. There is some reason it's been prevented from further broadcasts.

THE ROBE regularly airs on FXM and MAGNIFICIENT OBSESSION was on TCM a few months ago. THE GREEN LIGHT with Errol Flynn runs occasionally on TCM. Maybe after you watch the film you'll notice something that singles out WHITE BANNERS for legal issues with Douglas's estate

Obviously, those other films based on his writing (which you mentioned) do not have legal issues.

Publicity photo for WHITE BANNERS. I guess Jackie Cooper didn't want to wear a hat...

About five or six years ago, I befriended one of our former TCM board posters named Janet who has since passed away. I told her I wanted to see WHITE BANNERS, before I was aware of the Russian site...and she had a copy of it. She asked her husband to make a duplicate and mail the disc to me (along with some rare Paramount precodes starring Sylvia Sidney I had also been eager to watch).
I checked the quality of the copy on the Russian site and it looks just as good as what I have on disc.
I really wish the film would clear all legal hurdles and become available to the masses again.

It's a three screen event.
One has "White Banners," one has the forum up so I can type my inane comments and the TV is set to the Yankee game. We really are spoiled.
