Thank you. It's a really good one: .
This is a stunning one from the same run of pictures:
Didn't take from my end, Fading Fast. Could you re-post? I'm happy to accommodate, but I don't know what you want me to do? I don't know what "didn't take from end" means?
If it helps, here is the link to the Norma Shearer pic I posted: Norma Shearer Pic

Norma is breathtaking in that gown - especially in that second shot.

In the Dean Martin thread, in regard to Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964), DianedeBuda wrote:
"I'm very fond of 7 Hoods. Always thought Barbara's costumes weren't fitted quite right. BunnyWhit, what's your take? I rarely notice such things, so something's got to be off."

Diane, I wonder if you are reacting to this white number in particular?
Donfeld designed the costumes for Robin and the 7 Hoods. In this Runyonesque adaptation of the legend of Robin Hood, the costumes are stylized, and perhaps that is why socialite-who-has-it-all-in-hand Marian is dressed as she is. Everything she wears is just.....so much.
I don't think the garments are ill-fitting, but I also don't think they always flatter Rush. However, they do a great job of informing us about Marian. Take this white suit for example. A boxy jacket with high stand-up collar over a skirt with wide, deep pleats in a relatively sturdy fabric along with the large bow at the neck, plus the gloves and turban all in tone-on-tone white looks like, well, a costume. And indeed it is. It doesn't move particularly well on her, it is a lot of fabric, a lot of construction detail, a lot of pieces, and a lot of white, all designed to disguise the rattlesnake that is Marian.
For some reason, there is a dearth of photos of Rush in Robin and the 7 Hoods, which is a shame. Aside from the white suit, most of the rest of the costumes look nice on her, and still they put across the impression that Marian is doing her best to hide who she is, conceal any of her true flaws or assets (depending on where you're standing), and keep others away even when she is seductive.
Several of the gowns Marian wears are bejeweled, primarily when she is trying to get what she wants from a man, as if to distract him with the shiny while she robs his pockets. The gowns that stand out for me are an orchid one (which I believe is Rush's best costume in the film) and a cantaloupe one, both of which include airy, glittering over garments. There is also a white gown with all over beading which I think is less flattering on Rush. Among her other outfits in the film, I think I like best the buttery day dress she wears at the end of the film, but I don't know that yellow is really Rush's color.
The main thing I notice about all of Marian's ensembles is that she is completely covered. She always wears long skirts and sleeves, and usually she is dressed in something with layers. Marian always separates herself in this way. She keeps others at bay and gives nothing away. She hides behind her clothes and uses them to misrepresent who she is. When we look at her, are we supposed to see what she tells us she is, or are we supposed to believe our eyes?
Since you clearly have that feeling that there's "something off," listen to your gut on this one and leave that snake alone....lest you get bit!

You're right BunnyWhit, I couldn't find many pictures of Barbara Rush in those gowns she wore in ROBIN AND THE 7 HOODS 1964. Those are my favorite frocks in this movie. I did find a couple more samples -
This shot shows some of the frilly outfit she wears when she's putting one over on Dean and using him.
This picture shows some of the last ensemble she wears in the film - a bit of a Holiday scene.
Just an added note - I've always liked the suits the fellows wear -
Of course, Dean always looks good to me!

I thought the style of the costumes was just right for her character. I'll have to check my recording, but I believe this white gown is the one that prompted my comment. It seemed to accentuate every minor figure flaw instead of concealing them, which was not something I felt the character would have chosen - particularly when she was self-disguised as bait.

I agree regarding that white beaded gown. As I look at it again, it seems to be a beaded jacket over a long gown. I think it makes Rush look hippy (which she was not), and I'm wondering if it is the placement of the heavily beaded motif that makes this the case.
But isn't the orchid a beautiful color on her!

The tilted dress hats were really flying this past Wednesday on T CM: I caught a quick glimpse of what looked like a light-colored beret on Mercedes McCambridge in ALL THE KING'S MEN last night but can't confirm, Fading Fast.

Ginger Rogers had a great hat head as did Maureen O'Sullivan who looks adorable in "The Thin Man," with her cropped hair and sporting several cute hats in addition to the one you noted.
Re Mercedes McCambrige in "All the Kings Men," I haven't seen that movie in many years, but what - fashion-wise - stands out in my head from that movie (yes, I use the limited space in my undersized brain to remember wardrobe items from movies) is the beautiful polo coat the Broderick Crawford wears and the era-perfect guncheck raincoat that Ms. McCambridge sports (similar to the one Joan Bennett wore beautifully in "The Reckless Moment").
As to Ms. McCambridge and a hat, with her whirly-twirly hair, a hat (like the one in her lap) would be a good thing, but like you, I could not find a picture of her in a beret or beret-like hat from this movie.
And wonderful Joan Bennett in "The Reckless Moment" wearing Ms. McCambridge's coat.

You're welcome, Fading Fast, but if yours is an undersized brain... Think of the monolith here as BunnyWhit's and your combined fashion knowledge - I'm the one with his back to the camera :

Fading Fast, Ben Mankiewicz is stylin' tonight on TCM...
It looks like he's sporting New York pinstripes, and upon further inspection, I wonder about the flat color/stripes rule here: When wearing a striped shirt, a flat one-color tie is suggested or vice-versa, but what is considered correct when the dress suit is striped? Mankiewicz is wearing a one-color tie to contrast with the striped jacket, but the tie looks like it's breaking with the non-striped shirt rule.
I see BunnyWhit is currently online: Feel free to jump in as well, BunnyWhit!
