Two weeks from this coming evening the TCL CHINESE THEATRE has scheduled a special screening of ValleyGirl (1983)... The Sherman Theatre scene was interesting to me as, given the movie's punk element, I'd viewed multiple early screenings of THE DECLINE of western civilization at the Sherman Oaks theater in 1981: No longer a stone's drive to Hollywood for me, and never liking the exploitive flick anyway, I probably will pass.

Very interesting. Glad you mentioned it even if you aren't attending. Of course I love this exploitive flick. Martha Coolidge gets very frank and descriptive on the DVD commentary as I recall. This was the first time I had been made aware of directors being ordered to insert a certain number of nudity shots. From 2002 to 2003 Martha Coolidge was the Directors Guild of America's first female president.

With your mention of Martha Coolidge in the director' chair, I can see a feminist take - ironic - to the film which presumably has some appeal for you, galacticgirrrl... In a similar vein there was the preceding VAN NUYS BLVD. (1979), and like my reduction of ValleyGirl to one screenshot, there's the following truck which I unwittingly gained some Valley cred from:

Frugal might be the more applicable F word in this case. I can't resist a DVD bargain bin. I will miss them when they are gone. That is where I found Valley Girl. I almost left it because I'm not a big Cage fan.
The trailer for VAN NUYS BLVD. (1979) is ridiculous. I have never heard of it.

No longer a stone's drive to Hollywood for me, Is that longer or shorter than a stone's throw?
GIRRRL----- You found VALLEY GIRL in the DVD bargain bin? It sounds as if you've never seen it before then. I remember catching it on cable in the fall of '83. It was the first time most people have ever seen or heard of Nicholas Cage. Plus I also wound up liking the tune "A Million Miles Away" by The Plimsouls. Much better than most the tunes in it's soundtrack. Sepiatone

And then somehow I lost it to the sands of time. I never came across it on TV or in a video store. Better later than never. I did like, 'fer sure remember the Zappa hit had us all talking valley talk. How like totally annoying, like wow. Ugh.

So I won't be getting a copy from Santa I guess. I just popped over to Discogs to check on this..... In Canadian $ but I see what you mean Roadshow label Last Sold: Apr 8, 2023 Lowest: CA$40.20 Median: CA$119.10 Highest: CA$214.39 What an unlikely album to become a rarity. There was a store here where you would have been sorely ejected if you ever asked about such an LP.

As of late I would call it H#ll on Earth, or Pottersville 2.0 (like in the movie but with all the big old trees razed). The Record Peddler, a store that was right across from Maple Leaf Gardens, was a case in point. I’d bring my selections to the counter where a long-haired dude critiqued my selections. which went something like this: “Crap. Crap. Crap. Not bad. Crap. Crap. That’s good. Crap. Still want all these?” Even a 50 per cent approval rating was enough to make me think I had pretty cool taste in music. - Alan Cross

You could have just said Toronto. But when my family and I were there in '84 I was standing in a park directly across the street from the Maple Leaf Gardens(even took a photo of the Gardens from there) but don't recall ever seeing a record store there. I might have easily spent several hours browsing through it and also spending plenty money there too. Sepiatone
