April 27, 1968 Simon and Garfunkel's single “Mrs. Robinson” debuts on the Billboard Hot 100.Released April 5, it spent 13 weeks on the chart, peaking at No.1 on June 1st. Director Mike Nichols tapped the famed folk duo to create music for his film The Graduate in 1967. While filming the movie, Mike Nichols became fascinated with Simon and Garfunkel's music. After two weeks of this obsession, he met with Clive Davis at Columbia to license their music for his film. Simon was not as immediately receptive, viewing movies as akin to "selling out", but he agreed to write at least one or two new songs for the film after being impressed by Nichols' wit and the script. The film's use of pop music to emphasize the narrative and give voice to the inner workings of the main character, Benjamin Braddock, was groundbreaking for a film that was not a musical. The song "Mrs. Roosevelt" began life as an instrumental. Art Garfunkel suggested naming it after Bancroft’s character and prompted it being played it for Mike Nichols after "Punky's Dilemma" and "Overs" were rejected. It was not until after the film was released that Simon developed "Mrs. Robinson" into a full song. The Graduate's soundtrack album uses two short versions of "Mrs. Robinson"; a full version was later included on the Bookends LP. The song was additionally released on the Mrs. Robinson EP in 1968. “Mrs. Robinson” and its resulting soundtrack kickstarted an industry. Previously, getting kids to put down cash for the mood-setting music of a movie was considered absurd. In 1969, it became the first rock song to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Art Garfunkel implicates film director Mike Nichols in split with Paul SimonGarfunkel says the director's decision to drop Simon from the film of Catch-22 contributed to their parting in 1970Alan Arkin, Martin Sheen, Mike Nichols, and Art Garfunkel in Catch-22 (1970)Both he and Paul Simon were cast in Mike Nichols' adaptation of Joseph Heller's novel. But whereas Garfunkel received fourth billing, Simon's minor role never made the final cut. I do remember I was feeling a bit like Winston Smith from that assault. Sepiatone

It is a good thing I have only just learned of Nichols leaving my imaginary boyfriend on the cutting room floor. I might have missed out on a great number of fabulous films if I had been busy holding a grudge.

April 28, 1948 American radio personality Thomas Breneman passed away suddenlyThomas Breneman (June 18, 1900 – April 28, 1948)He owned 1533-44 North Vine Street, A Truly Historic AddressTom Breneman's "Breakfast in Hollywood" was one of the popular radio programs of the 1940s. He was such a success that he established his eponymous restaurant on Vine Street off Sunset Boulevard. He broadcast episodes of his program from his restaurant. This unscripted morning show included audience participation and fans lined up outside the studio as early as 5am to take part. In 1946 Breneman and United Artists released the film Breakfast in Hollywood to promote the radio program. The 90-minute feature included stars Bonita Granville, Beulah Bondi, Raymond Walburn, ZaSu Pitts, Billie Burke and Hedda Hopper and featured musical numbers by Spike Jones, the Nat King Cole Trio and Andy Russell. Just before the April 28, 1948 radio broadcast of ‘Breakfast In Hollywood’ was to begin Breneman had a heart attack and died. Garry Moore took over hosting duties but the show quickly failed without Breneman. Sammy Davis Jr. and investors purchased the building. It became the ABC Radio Center. This is the location where Louella Parsons did an interview show with celebrities. After ABC left, Trans American Video took over the building. ‘The Merv Griffin Show’ was filmed at this location. Most of Tom Breneman's Hollywood Restaurant is gone. Only the facade remains. Wow, thanks galactic! I had never heard of Breneman or the history behind the building/radio program. What a novel idea. I love continuing to learn more things on this board every time I log on.

The first U.S. experimental 3D television broadcast was an episode of Space PatrolThe Space Patrol television show ran from March 9, 1950 – February 26, 1955. It followed the 30th-century adventures of Commander-in-Chief Buzz Corry of the United Planets Space Patrol and his young sidekick Cadet Happy, as they faced interplanetary villains with diabolical schemes. As was common at the time, some of these villains had Russian or German accents. Space Patrol used sci-fi gadgets such as ray guns, miniature space-o-phones and atomolights. The show was targeted to children, but attracted a sizable adult audience. It became an overnight sensation. A 30-minute episode was the the first U.S. experimental 3D television broadcast on April 29, 1953 in Los Angeles on KECA. Unfortunately, 3D glasses were not prevalent at the time and, while the show aired, it appeared to be a blurry mess to those without glasses in these early days of television. Since this first experiment, several attempts at 3D TV broadcasts have been made in the US on shows including Moonlighting, Third Rock from the Sun, Medium, and Shark Week programing. 3D found some success in movie theaters, but it never seemed to take off for home theaters due in part to a lack of content and expensive equipment. April 30, 1912 The Universal Film Manufacturing Company was incorporated in New York.
Universal is the oldest surviving film studio in the United States. It is the world's fifth oldest after Gaumont, Pathé, Titanus, and Nordisk Film. Legend has it that founding partner Carl Laemmle's entry into the motion picture production began when he searched for a place to open a clothing store in Chicago. He stumbled onto a line of people waiting to see a nickelodeon. Intrigued by the popularity of moving pictures, Laemmle changed careers and opened The White Front Theater. Carl Laemmle
Laemmle broke with Edison's custom of refusing to give billing and screen credits to performers. By naming the movie stars, he attracted many of the leading players of the time, contributing to the creation of the star system. In 1910, he promoted Florence Lawrence, formerly known as "The Biograph Girl", and actor King Baggot, in what may be the first instance of a studio using stars in its marketing. May 1, 1941Citizen Kane opened at the RKO Palace Theatre on Broadway in New York.Radio City Music Hall's management refused to screen Citizen Kane for its premiere. A possible factor was Parsons's threat that The American Weekly would run a defamatory story on the grandfather of major RKO stockholder Nelson Rockefeller. Other exhibitors feared being sued for libel by Hearst and refused to show the film. In March Welles threatened the RKO board of governors with a lawsuit if they did not release the film. Schaefer stood by Welles and opposed the board of governors. When RKO still delayed the film's release Welles offered to buy the film for $1 million and the studio finally agreed to release the film on May 1. Chicago premiere: May 6 Welles said that at the Chicago premiere that he attended the theater was almost empty. Los Angeles premiere: May 8 at El Capitan Overall it lost money in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., but made a profit in Seattle.

May 1, 1969 Mister Rogers goes to Washington Children's educational television host Fred Rogers testifies before US Senate Subcommittee on Communications to secure funding for creation of PBS. Over the course of Rogers' passionate yet respectful testimony, Senator Pastore's gruff demeanor slowly softened. The chairman even said that, though he was "supposed to be a pretty tough guy," Rogers' fervent plea had given him "goosebumps." Pastore effused: "I think it's wonderful. I think it's wonderful," and, after a slight pause, he made his conclusion clear: "Looks like you just earned the twenty million dollars." “L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.” “If we can somehow rid ourselves of illusions. The illusion that we are greater or lesser than we are. The illusion that we’re going to save the world. There are a lot of illusions that people walk around with. I would love to be able to be present in every moment I have.Fred Rogers testifies before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKy7ljRr0AA

Interesting that the publication covering the CITIZEN KANE opening says Hedda liked the film. Hedda's daughter says Hedda called it vile.

I did a double-take also on that photo of Hedda kims. Not just her daughter, Hedda said it was.... "vicious and irresponsible attack on a great man" and criticizing its corny writing and old fashioned photography.“What I saw appalled me. It was an impudent, murderous trick, even for the boy genius, to perpetrate on a newspaper giant.”(Gossip columnist Hedda Hopper) citizenkanebook.com/chapter-ten/Maybe part of a media zinger fest - it would surely have made her blood boil to see that photo and caption. And speaking of zingers... Nice one Mr. S. If you start a career in stand-up please let us know.
