Yesterday I received this month's Smithsonian magazine. Unfortunately for me there is an article that the Belgian gov't, in the Congo, separated babies of mixed race from parents and put them in an orphanage run by the church. When after WWII civil war broke out, the UN airlifted the nuns and priests, leaving the children to fend for themselves. Complaints led the Belgian gov't to retrieve the children and put them in foster homes throughout Belgium. There are lawsuits going to the EU courts to have this declared a crime against humanity.
I told you above brief facts of the article so you might understand why I say my interest in history and my interest in films sometimes ruins my enjoyment of a film. THE NUN'S STORY has been a film I enjoy, but watching today, in the back of my mind is, not all those associated with the church were so benign. I always knew that, but when an article covering an episode of history closely relates to a favorite film, my enjoyment lessens.
Best to remember-it's only a movie.

I understand how you feel, Kims. The Nun's Story is a favorite of mine, we get to see the uniquely beautiful Audrey Hepburn doing some very serious acting and not just being charming. Not that Audrey being charming isn't delightful in itself, but it doesn't always give her much opportunity to really work her talent. I'm also a little miffed when her co-stars are old enough to be her father.
So I watch the Nun's Story and I'm always really entranced with the beginning when we get to see what the young nuns go through. It's interesting to see how hard it is for a brilliant young woman to be as humble as she's required to be.
It's inspiring and admirable when we find out that it's been her lifelong dream to help African children.
But then we come to the part that always disappoints me. Her time serving in the psychiatric hospital. Her fear of and seeming dislike of the mentally ill patients bothers me. That's a low part for me. Now there's this news. How horrific to take children from their parents for no good reason.

re; Audrey with men old enough to be her father: LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON (right title?) It's a funny film, but sometimes it seems creepy with Gary Cooper looking older than Chevalier

Well, I always kinda liked Coop in certain roles, but as a romantic lead with any actress of any age always struck me as kind of creepy.
