I struggled with this one, but ultimately went with THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.

Well you didn't struggle long enough 'cause you made the wrong choice. 🤣 LOL...I do like ALL ABOUT EVE...it was a film I first saw on the big screen at USC when I was studying cinema. I still remember a lot of the professor's lecture on that one, and it was a great way to be introduced to such a classic.
But I have even greater fondness for THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES which I first saw with my grandparents while watching the old American Movie Classics channel.

Both of these films are good studies of how circumstance and the actions of others can change a person. It was a tough one, but I went with Eve.

I think you're confusing the film with your memories of being with your grandparents, your THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. Shady reasoning, but it IS a reason whereas I liked both and was rooting for whichever was the underdog at that moment. 😂

I love both of these films, but I had to go with THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, because I seem to get something new from it every time I watch.

Shady reasoning, but it IS a reason whereas I liked both and was rooting for whichever was the underdog at that moment. 😂 You may be misjudging my reasons. Yes, I associate the films with specific memories, but I also look at the quality of the films. Both have literate scripts and are well-produced. The main reason ALL ABOUT EVE falls short for me is because I think one of the actresses should have been reigned in, and her scenery chewing, which some find to be added camp value, pulls me out of the story. And the main reason THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES works better for me is that I think it's a stronger artifact of its era, in terms of representing postwar adjustments, than ALL ABOUT EVE is, which could have been made in any era. But yes, we all have our reasons why something resonates with us.

Yeah, it feels a bit more multi-dimensional. The other thing I realize when I watch it again, especially if it's been a few years since the last time I saw it, is that as I age and develop a keener sense of history, it speaks to different maturity levels in me. So I find it kind of fascinating in that regard.

For me, ALL ABOUT EVE is one of those movies that gets so much positive hype over the years that I think many "adore" it because they feel obligated to or else be thought of as some kind of dullard. I think the movie is good, sure. But not the "iconic" film many say they think it is.

The difference to me is timing. At the date of release, I feel BYOOL was more significant and ground breaking in so many ways.
But as time goes on, AAE over takes it because of the stars and future stars in the cast. And that its one of the most quotable films ever. I feel AAE's importance lasted much longer. From the standpoint of 2023, I had to choose AAE.
