She's French (2017)
1h 14m Director: Charlotte Seegers The documentary asks where the cultural obsession with French women originates from and how our thinking about her might be a foreign invention
Speaking with French women in London and Paris alongside professionals from the worlds of fashion, film, education, politics and journalism, 'She's French' plays with and strips bare our assumptions about la femme française. This was a funny yet thought provoking little film. You can't help but catch yourself thinking how much the women interviewed reinforce the stereotypes, no doubt part of the plan. I am guilty of many such thought crimes particularly when it comes to music. French female musicians could sing the phone book and make it beautiful, appealing & alluring - or so I have lead myself to believe. The history of the myth is only examined as far back as French New Wave cinema and doesn't touch on music which is a pity. It could have peaked in on Jazz Age Paris, the Art Nouveau period - or any of the art movements probably. She may even pre-date Marie Antoinette for all we know.
