I've been reading up on Ballarat, the town in Victoria where it was filmed. Should've thought of the following one earlier for you - known as THE HEART GUY in the States: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Doctor_(Australian_TV_series)

I am only halfway through Doctor Blake, just starting season 3.

I will see if these are on BritBox. I am only halfway through Doctor Blake, just starting season 3. I envy you, actually. My local PBS didn't carry the series, though my cable provider also carries PBS from the neighboring state, so I was able to catch the first two seasons, but then it ended without them showing the rest. Bummer. I remember really liking the dynamic with the housekeeper. Ever since Mrs. Hudson in Sherlock Holmes, that seems to be a recurring pattern with these kinds of mysteries. Grantchester has a central housekeeper role too. You're probably familiar with The Miss Fisher Mysteries, a slightly more comic crime series set in Melbourne in the 1920's. It's cute, with a very flashy leading lady.

I think Doctor Blake has five seasons, plus there are two TV movie follow-ups. Reading ahead on the episode descriptions, Blake becomes engaged to the housekeeper in the last regular episode. The first TV movie has them married and off on a honeymoon where he naturally gets involved in a case.
The second TV movie only features the housekeeper/wife since Blake is said to be missing and presumed dead. The title has been changed from The Doctor Blake Mysteries to The Blake Mysteries, since that is now the housekeeper's surname. Craig McLachlan, who played Blake, was dropped by the Australian network that produced the series, when he was brought up on charges of sexual harassment by an actress who worked with him on a stage musical. He was exonerated but since this was the beginning of the MeToo era, it ruined his career and he hasn't worked on camera from that time, meaning he's probably been forced into early retirement.
The TV movie with the housekeeper/wife character functioning solo didn't go over as well as the original series, so no more episodes were made.
There is no dip in quality so far in the third season...though I felt the second season episodes were very strong and some of them are hard to top.

I appreciate the update, since I've always wondered what trajectory it may have taken. I'm not surprised he married Jean because there was always that undercurrent there, at least as long as I was able to follow the story. I hope you'll record your impressions here as you finish up the series. I love that streaming has enabled us to take such deep dives.

Yes, I thought of dropping Miss Fisher's MURDER MYSTERIES into the thread for TopBilled - something about the character's house which I have it in mind I've also seen in one of the other Australian shows but could not find it. With a slight cast to one of her eyes and darkened hair, lead Essie Davis' look for the show reminded me of Siouxsie Sioux of the Banshees:

I finally finished watching season 3 today. And I was surprised how good it was. I really loved season 2 and didn't know if they'd be able to sustain the quality of the storytelling. But there were some clever developments in season 3, and the poignant story between Lucien and Jean started to gain traction in the last episode of the season, which brought tears to my eyes.
I've been reading up on season 4, and I have a feeling I may enjoy it quite a bit because the writers are exploring some interesting parts of Blake's backstory which I am excited about.
Such a brilliant series, excellent writing and acting...plus outstanding production values.

I've been reading up on Ballarat, the town in Victoria where it was filmed. TopBilled, I only caught a brief commercial sound snippet of what sounded to me like a possible pairing of the suggested Doc Martin and The DOCTOR BLAKE Mysteries on PBS this coming Memorial Day weekend, so check your local listings if have access to public television...
