Watching the news about the Nashville shooting at a private Christian school today I was surprised to hear that the perpetrator was a 28 female. Has that ever happened, I wondered? Well, there's more to the story. She is transgender and a former student who had written a manifesto. I'm guessing he/she felt unwelcome or worse as a student. Referring to the shooter as female seems confusing or even misleading.
"The suspect, a 28-year-old from Nashville who was later identified as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, was shot and killed by authorities in a lobby area on the second floor of the school, according to police. Nashville Police Chief John Drake said the suspect was female and identified as transgender but didn't immediately provide more details.
He also said the suspect was a former student."

So my question is, I guess, should the news elaborate in this kind of situation and identify the person as transgender rather than just female? In this case, it sounds relative to the story. The report on the news buried that at the end. If they were talking about a positive story, I think they'd mention it. Something the news may have to figure out how to report.

I agree, it does seem germane to the story because it may shed light on the killer's motives.

@mayo re: women shooters. Brenda Spencer is considered one of the first school shooters with ten victims in 1979. When asked why, she said, "I don't like Mondays."
Tubi has a film about her, tubitv.com/movies/681653/i-don-t-like-mondays

Tubi has a film about her, tubitv.com/movies/681653/i-don-t-like-mondays Interesting, I never heard of her. Not surprisingly, she had a terrible home life and there were plenty of warning signs of trouble ahead. The gun she used in the shooting was a Christmas present from her father. Apparently, The Boomtown Rats wrote I Don't Like Mondays based on her quote, according to wiki. Who knew? "Since 2013, there have been 101 incidents where there was a female shooter out of 4,025 mass shootings, said Mark Bryant, executive director of the Gun Violence Archive.". How did we get here with children having to regularly drill what to do in case of a shooting?
