I always thought I was a middle of the road kind of person. Moving to the Sunshine State I discover I must be a liberal. Case in point, principal of charter school shows a photo of Michelangelo's David to students and was fired. Oh my, David pornographic? Now the mayor of Florence has invited said principal as well as the parents and students to visit. A daring invitation-what if parents and students come armed with ball bats to destroy all those Italian artworks?

According to CNN, the problem was not the picture but that the parents weren't notified before showing it to the 6th graders. But, yeah that's nuts. (Pun intended.)
"Last year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill into law, which states in part, "The parent of each public school student has the right to receive effective communication from the school principal as to the manner in which instructional materials are used to implement the school's curricular objectives."

ah, yes, it sounds reasonable doesn't it? Every model of the planets and their orbit must have effective communication to parents, every photo or artifact from the Civil War, instruments for math class (protractors, compasses) illustrated literature books. There was some controversy when the law was proposed that it overrides local school boards, that the notifications to all parents on all materials was cost prohibitive and the state was not providing funding for these notifications. I'm not saying parents shouldn't be involved with the curriculum, yet where are they when the school board meets to discuss changes?
But my original post is my shock that the photo was objectional to 6th graders who have probably seen as much on tv and film. And if the parents found nothing objectional, why did they complain? I guess my parents and my jr. high school were neglectful for allowing museum fieldtrips.

I get you. I guess these kids have never been to a museum before. Naked people everywhere!! This is a teachable moment. There's a difference between pornography and an artist like Michelangelo spending hours painting or sculpting a nude.
How can a school function with passing everything by the parents? Sex ed, sure absolutely. I get that. But this? Nuts.

This incidence with David reminds me of what MOVIES-TV does with the noir film The Dark Corner; at the end of the film an old Italian statue is shown and the top-half is blocked out. Note that the film is from 1946 and when that film was shown in theaters back in the 40s, they didn't block out breast from artwork! But here in the 21st century, they do so. Insane.
BTW: Seeing David was the most moving artistic experience I have ever had. The light was shinning just right into the hall where David is (in Florance) and I got chills looking at this masterpiece work of art.

1964 NY World's Fair. Taking the school bus ride saw my first Mustang. At the fair, the Vatican pavilion Michelangelo's Pieta. More than one level of conveyor belt walkways, I was 11 and not on the closest level and overcome. Without adult emotions, I didn't identify a precise feeling. Mother Mary seemed weeping a real live body. The Christ a genuine body in death. My religious education, I knew the crucifixion, I knew the request for the body to be interred in a new tomb. I knew the Resurrection, but never visualized this scene. Seemed impossible to be cold marble. I still get tears in my eyes.

I can't resist this: EPA announced that Florida is the state with the most lead pipes delivering water to homes. That fact may explain a lot.
