North by Northwest Ernest Lehman's writing is so very good, as his Oscar nom for this film indicates.
I think I prefer Robert Burks' cinematography in Rear Window (1954) and To Catch a Thief (1955) to his work here -- but I have split ends it's splitting hairs, really.
Citizen Kane Pretty hard to argue with Orson Welles' and Herman J. Mankiesicz's Oscar win for writing, and I can find no fault in Gregg Toland's cinematography, as usual.
It's Rosebud for me.

One of the most entertaining of all films for me (NxNW) vs the film that is impeccable in all aspects, whether it is Toland's chiaroscuro cinematography and deep focus, the masterful performance from Welles, or the still very modern editing techniques. It's also Rosebud for me.

I realize this will be a lopsided tally for Citizen Kane but I went with NXNW if only because it entertains me from start to finish and I don’t feel the same about Kane. When I’m flipping channels and land on NXNW, I watch the rest of the movie. When I land on Citizen Kane, I keep flipping.

But here Kane got the nod for several reasons, mostly it's cinematic innovations and method of storytelling. And of course, Toland's touch doesn't hurt. Sepiatone

I think I prefer NORTH BY NORTHWEST because there's some fun scenes in it; it's just that it was so over-aired a few years ago.

I love Hitchcock but feel North by Northwest is one of his weakest films. But I recognize that a great arty director needs to make a big Hollywood-pleasing film once in a while, for financial reasons. But perhaps, like Hamlet:
