MAN and WIFE, one of the early Norma Shearer movies, is said to have been released 100 years ago on this day... The working title for MAN and WIFE appears to have been entitled "When the Cows Come Home", and though little in the way of production stills of the 1923 movie exist, the flammable film is said to have survived as a nitrate copy at the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Conversely, another Shearer release - THE Tower of Lies - seems to have yielded its share of surviving stills, but the 1925 movie itself is listed as lost thanks to the M-G-M vault fire of 1965. (The studio's stills were fortunately housed in a separate area.)

THE DEVIL'S PARTNER, one of the early Norma Shearer movies, is said to have been released 100 years ago sometime this month... By most accounts, Norma Shearer was athletic, and given her tremendous drive to succeed in Hollywood, I can easily picture her roughing stobs and such in the woodsy setting of the film with the mostly male cast/crew without complaint.

One-hundred years ago on this day Norma Shearer had much to bask in since she was supporting John Gilbert in "THE WOLF MAN!" at the cinema as the Baltimore Sun declared her a "STAR" and announced her lead in BROKEN BARRIERS which was in production at the time... Unfortunately, both "THE WOLF MAN!" and BROKEN BARRIERS are currently listed as lost.

Though Norma Shearer grew up in Montreal, the following movie was the only Canadian film to feature the soon-to-be MGM actress: "Blue Water" is said to have been released a hundred years ago on this day in Canada. Unfortunately, like many of the Norma Shearer silents, it is listed as lost.

The following film is said to have premiered on this date a hundred years ago: I find myself bemoaning that at least two Joan Crawford silents were screened back-to-back Sundays on T CM of late while having to type another "listed as lost" here for her rival.

I'm sure you know this, NoShear, but this is new to me. I read Hedda Hopper's book FROM UNDER MY HAT which covers her Broadway and film career more than her columnist years. She met Norma in New Jersey while they were both there making films. Norma was first a model for Tecla pearls. Her first film was with Reginald Denny in LEATHERPUSHERS.

Sorry I'm late to your post here, kims, as I missed it until just a bit ago... This was all new to me as well - including the Tecla advertising: Here she was as a "Miss Lotta Miles" model for the KELLY-SPRINGFIELD tire company: There's some discrepancy as to Norma Shearer's first film, but I'm confident that it was "The Flapper" in an uncredited appearance. Her troubled sister, Athole, also had an uncredited part in the 1920 pic. Thank you for thinking of me, kims, and I sincerely hope things are getting back to normal for you...
