The Oscars are just SO unimportant to me. Was shocked to see that ABC has 5 hrs of pre-show coverage as well as the event. And sister network E! has almost as much. Does anyone actually watch this kind of ... stuff?

I don't watch the pre-event stuff. I record the Oscars and allow an extra hour because they are always underestimating. I FF through most of the performances, still wondering why they are necessary. One of the very few of those extras I liked was Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster song and dance. As for the need for comedy speeches before a category, judging from last year's show today's performers are too thin skinned. What would they do if they faced Hope's or Carson's zingers?

I typically don't watch the pre-show interviews/coverage; I like to watch the actual ceremony with my film club friends. It's a fun event for us in that regard.

I'd rather hear the songs as recorded with the film for context to better judge how well they serve the movie.

David Byrne sounds a little off He always did. Especially when voicing his "thoughts". Anyway.... My sister in law Anita used to LIVE for all that red carpet "Who are you wearing?" crap. It was the reason she watched ANY awards program. Sepiatone

Clarification from the AV Club:
We want to emphasize that we don’t blame David Byrne and Stephanie Hsu for the weird, off-key performance of “This Is A Life,” the nominated song from Everything Everywhere All At Once. Both are consummate performers and did the best they could with what seemed like technical issues. It didn’t help that the song features deliberately dissonant harmonies (which fits well with the film) that aren’t easy to pull off live. It was the least successful performance of the night, but at least they looked great doing it. [Cindy White]
