Over on the other side, a poster asked for films based on real events so that he could build a timeline of films to go along with the actual events of WWII. And people did.
I thought it might be fun to make a thread on films about actual events in various wars. I'm not going to make any list or timeline. Or even a separate thread for each war.
Either way, its just an idea, what do you folks think ?

I would assume that the vast majority of war films are based on actual events in various wars. Thus what might be of interest is the few war films that were not based on actual events other than being set in a specific war timeframe.
E.g. character driven films (instead of event driven),like Eight Iron Men (1952). Set in WWII in Germany, but not around any actual battle or specific conflict.

DESTINATION GOBI with Richard Widmark, Martin Milner, Darryl Hickman, Don Taylor, and Casey Adams. Navy personnel sent to Mongolia during WWII to set up a weather station. The Navy in the desert is strange enough, but when the Japanese spot the weather station, the Navy enlists the help of the Mongols in exchange for-wait for it-saddles forming the Mongolian calvary. Of course liberties were probably made for entertainment value, but based on a true story.
Oddly, the Mongolians speak like Native Americans in old westerns. Why are there dialogue coaches if this is all they can do? Eli Wallach says he couldn't speak any of the languages of the characters he played. He listened to the rhythm of authentic people of whatever nationality and used the rhythm to create a more authentic accent and style of speaking. He would have been a great dialogue coach.
DESTINATION GOBI was an enjoyable film. Add it to your list

I saw Oppenheimer (2023) today. Going into the theater, there were many people clad in pink clearly coming from the Barbie movie. I did not wear any special costume to see Oppenheimer. What would appropriate? Tweed and a big brimmed hat?
While certainly not perfect, Christopher Nolan's 3 hour film is quite impressive. The cast includes Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Kenneth Brannagh, and Gary Oldman. The film follows the physicist from student, to professor, to his personal life, to the creation of Low Alamos and the bomb, to his struggling with his legacy and the arms race, to him losing his security clearance.
Nolan does not use CGI to recreate the first detonation of the bomb. The test was delayed by weather, when it finally goes off we see the team at Low Alamos celebrating that their dedication to the "gadget" paid off. The next shot we see trucks, loaded with two bombs heading off to Japan. It's quite sobering. The film does a good job of putting into historical context why the U.S. used the bomb. If you are interested in this part of history, it's worth a look. Go see it on the big screen.

A prediction: Oppenheimer will obviously garner multiple Oscar nominations. I predict that Robert Downey Jr will win for best supporting actor.
1) He's terrific as Lewis Strauss but 2) Hollywood loves a redemption story. Downey, Jr. has come along way from his drug addicted past with mug shots in the news. He's made a lot of $$ as Iron Man and seems to be well liked. I imagine he'd give a memorable acceptance speech.

You heard it here first. He just won. Well deserved.
