Bringing Up Baby is routinely regarded as one of the defining examples of the screwball era and widely considered the premiere pairing of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Their chemistry cannot be denied and Hawks' direction keeps the plot moving at a steady pace. While, "Baby" isn't one of my personal favorite films, its influence and staying power is undeniable. It also further illustrates the comedic genius of one Cary Grant.
When filming North by Northwest, it was reported that Hitchcock and Company set out to make the Hitchcock film to end all Hitchcock films. They largely succeeded. It incorporates so many of the elements of his previous films (mistaken identity, sexual innuendos, etc.) into a cross country thriller that includes some of the most indelible images in all of classic cinema. And once again, we have Cary Grant at the helm. By the time NxNW was released, Grant had reinvented himself as a suave leading man, a pre-cursor to James Bond so to speak. Yet his comedic timing is still evident here, and as great as Jimmy Stewart is, which is who Hitch reportedly first considered for the lead role, its hard to imagine anyone other than Grant excelling so well as R.O.T.

Overexposure on TCM has "ruined" NORTH BY NORTHWEST for me. I usually have to take my mind back to the mid-1990s, the first time I watched it in a college film class on a large screen with commentary by our professor, to remember the real impression it made on me. But even though I liked it at the time, I never was fully captured by it. And I am captured by BRINGING UP BABY every time I watch it.

Well Top---- Anybody who's been on the TCM boards knows my opinion is the opposite of yours. Never could stand BRINGING UP BABY and try to never miss NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Sepiatone

Sepiatone Something about BRINGING UP BABY works for me...it actually gets better with repeat viewings. For one thing, the character actors get a bit more to do here than the character actors do in NORTHWEST, and the leads are just so well in-sync.
To be honest, it feels strange to compare two such different films. But yeah, if I was going to an island and could only pick one of these two classics to take along with me, I'd enjoy spending eternity with BABY.

I cast my vote for BRINGING UP BABY. It's all funny. Even the straight men and women who have no comic lines or actions are funny. The scene in which Grant and Hepburn join Robson and Ruggles for dinner at Robson's home is hilarious, with Grant acting preoccupied and getting up every other minute to follow the dog George around in hopes he will lead him to his dinosaur bone. Also, the scene in the jail is hilarious. In my opinion, there never was a better actor to play screwball comedy than Cary Grant.

Another vote for Bringing Up Baby Did you actually vote? I ask because I posted that that my choice was Bringing Up Baby, and after doing this at various other threads, found out one must "vote" at the top of the thread.

Like you, I realized after I left this thread that I needed to "vote," but as it was very late and I had been on my computer for quite a while, I was just too tired to go back and vote.

I think they’re both great movies, with both being at or near the top of their genres. But Bringing Up Baby is the one that I’d enjoy watching almost any time.

Even though I enjoy Hitchcock very much, I really must vote for Howard Hawks on this one.

For me it's mostly a matter of degrees. Baby is an all time favourite. North, I'll watch it if I'm a mood for it.
I do think that experiencing both is a good way of enjoying Grant's acting range, especially if you are new to his work.
Have always loved Hepburn, almost in a "she can do no wrong" way.
And I have a weakness for almost anything Hitchcock, although North is a lesser effort of his from where I sit. In fact, I've just looked up Hitchcock's filmography, and I would rank it #12 on my own Hitch list.
