Once again a missed opportunity like the Warhol underpants: The band returned the towels to the department store after the shoot. Now they would be auctioned, a Go-Go's line issued... When Drew Barrymore inducted The Go-Go's into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this is how she did it.

Those were good examples of letting images of the performers speak for themselves, often the best approach. Barry Gordy had a sort of Motown charm school to teach them all about movement, etc., so they were always ready to strike a pose. The old teen idols were often sold with airbrushed glossies which the fan mags could reproduce for the kids to tack to their bedroom walls.

And probably a whole line of 'not intended to be funny' covers. But I'll go with comedy for 100!??

That one goes into the benefit-of-the-doubt category because of who it is. Another entry in that category would be Ms. West. She did a couple of these "rock" albums. Her renditions of "Great Balls of Fire" and "Light My Fire" are a treat and her version of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" made it into Myra Breckinridge.

Bit of digression here.... My cousin used to think Jerry Lee Lewis was actually singing, "Great Balls Afire!" Sepiatone

I must also digress.... I bought this LP but when I put it on the turntable the second item came out of my speakers. I didn't think the Modfather capable of such humour at that point in his life but I did entertain the idea he might be playing some practical joke. Epilogue: the record company sent me a new copy and Paul Weller is now hilarious. Guess that will happen to the best of them - Bowie, Shatner.... The Jam Beat Surrender Les Schtroumpfs

Back to our regularly scheduled program... I have no idea why I bought this album. I don't get it. I don't like the cover. But I like it because I don't get it. Not safe as milk.... I put it on again last night to be sure I hadn't finally come to the right point in my life to get it - but no, nothing happened.

Maybe you were being catfished? Beefheart was part of Zappa's stable of looney toons on Straight Records, so I think they all tried to outdo each other. I agree with you but I thought I remembered Rolling Stone being on board with it so I checked. In 2003 this album was #58 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Wha??? Quick! A palate cleanser!

This cover I always liked for its muted psychedelia. ( U, 1970) These guys played a kind of "acid folk" and were somewhat influential on the British scene, especially for their broad use of instrumentation. What albums I didn't buy at the time I picked up later at yard sales, but they were never hugely popular in the States.

These guys were never very popular in the States either, and they were FROM the States! But they are high on the list of "Weird band names from the '60's" which is quite lengthy. Sepiatone

Not that we I take any stock in what Rolling Stone thinks but they may be endangering young fragile minds with such contrived data. I suppose the GTOs are on there as well. I got Permanent Damage listening to Permanent Damage. Psych is utter catnip for me and I really shouldn't go down this road....I may not get back. Love ISB, CWB, IBD. Love it all. Popular, obscure, muted, acid, prog, lite....

I think some of them, like The Strawberry Alarm Clock, just picked a noun and an adjective out of a hat and went with it. More commercial than "mystical", but the public seemed to love it and it usually got you on The Ed Sullivan Show. Big Brother and the Holding Company, another "name out of a hat" band, scored bigtime by getting R. Crumb to do the cover.
