If it weren't Superbowl weekend I would say there was a Netflix/Hulu/Peacock/HBO streaming announcement coming down the pike (oh! idioms alert). The Upfronts are in March...are they still just network programs? At any rate, all very suspicious. Warren is no spring chicken and he must feel the time crunch for unfinished business. Surely we would have heard tittle tattle if something was in the works, or is this the start of the tittle? If it is just another joust in the copyright battle - brilliant not arrogant to anyone who has crossed paths with this branch of the legal establishment. I didn't take it as arrogant at all. On the contrary, he is taking himself down a peg, I wouldn't underestimate what this would be for a man like Beatty. His collaboration/dialectic discourse seems to be an admonition/admission if not of a terrible movie certainly a lost opportunity. Whether he is taking all the blame or just part of it, I'm not sure. A bit of conjecture on my part as I have never seen the movie and I am no Beatty expert either. I am pretty sure I wouldn't like it. At all. Pink streets, Madonna's nether regions, cornball knock-outs - I didn't need this TCM tidbit to tell me. Who is completely off...I can't tell if the patient is male or female

I managed movie theaters for 16 years. We ran the sneak preview of HEAVEN CAN WAIT in Terre Haute IN, which to this day has no passenger airport. That's an important point because Paramount notified us that Warren was expected to show up. Odd, with the sneak preview booked all over the country, Warren is flying into Indianapolis and doing an hour long drive to T.H? when there were four screens running it in INDY? Of course he didn't show up. Years later I'm managing an INDY theatre where the execs, the press and publicists have private screenings of films before release. Again, Paramount says Warren is coming. No way he slipped in without me seeing him. The theater was locked, I viewed credentials of all 20 of the attendees. I think another manager had similar story when DICK TRACY opened. I still don't get the "Warren is coming" business.

That is a great tale kims. The NXNW/barren Casablanca-esque runway imagery it is conjuring up in my mind is fantabulous. The business is business I suppose. And even if he and/or his people sent false PR stunt type information to every theatre it is still such fun.
The Rolling Stones often rehearse(d) for tours here which lead(s) to all kinds of rambling runs & hijinx for city inhabitants such as myself - did you hear they are renting a house on the Bridle Path? Mick Jagger was dining in your seat last night; they may show up at the Pete Best show.

I second the motion that TCM should rerun some of Osborne's intros. At 31 days of Oscar or Summer Under the Stars would be a nice touch. I'd also like to see Osborne's interviews rerun occasionally From time to time TCM has rerun RO's Intros. It would seem to me that TCM owns these outright and could broadcast them at anytime. I've mentioned to some of the powers that be they should rerun them during the wee hours. No one ever mentioned residuals.
Personally my impression, based on nothing, they would like to move on. After all it's not the Robert Osborne channel. Though, also my two cents, Robert Osborne was so loved by viewers his presence hangs over the hosts as if to say, you'll never be as loved or as good so don't even try.
As far as RO's Private Screenings are concerned I believe some might have rights issues with clips shown. As I have mentioned before Rod Steiger's interview has likely never been repeated. Many of the others were. They certainly are precious time capsules.
I can't post as a guest on the Warren Beatty/ Dock Tracy thread but I just wanted to thank Fancy for putting the video on his YouTube page. I saw Beatty's Dick Tracy in the theater when it came out. I appreciated the style/look of his film with the comic book colors and the cameos of famous actors under heavy heavy makeup and prostetics. It was of pretty good movie but not one that stays with you long. The worst part, hands down was Madonna. She is not an actress and was anachronistic to the 1930s feel of the movie. One Beatty story from about 20 years ago: He, his wife Annette Henning and Jack Nicholson were flying somewhere when they decided to make a pit stop in Wichita, KS. Henning had grown up there and wanted to visit her old house. So the three of them knocked on the door. Can you imagine opening the door to find the three of them there?

Thanks for the link above. I plan to watch it soon. I found this article that claims to be all about the airing from the night before last, but it has a link to only the 2009 bit. Beatty is occasionally funny in that one, referring to the songs by "Sammy Sondheim" who "His songs aren't the easiest to hum along to, but he's very well respected" and to Warren Beatty, "who's a bit of a knee-jerk liberal, which I don't have much patience for". Also he questions all the phony sets and use of primary color in his own film. I"m delighted to see any Beatty appearances, few and far between as they come. Took him 15 years to make that Howard Hughes movie. www.avclub.com/warren-beattys-latest-dick-tracy-tv-special-is-a-new-wo-1850104244

Actually, self indulgence has always gone hand in hand with self deprecation. It's probably your personal dislike for Beatty that made you finally notice that fact. And it's obvious all three were in on the "joke". I feel that mostly only those(like many here) who take movies just a bit too seriously will hate this bit of self parody.
I never understood all the critical slamming of Beatty's DICK TRACY. I mean, a fictional movie based on a fictional character from a comic strip? How much cinematic "art" could anyone with a modicum of average intelligence actually expect? Or even WANT to?
