Did anyone watch the Dick Tracy Special with Mankiewicz, Maltin and Beatty tonight?
WOW! It was likely one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever seen.
An alleged Zoom call between Mankiewicz, Maltin, Beatty and Dick Tracy on how Beatty messed up making Dick Tracy. Dick Tracy says it wasn't real enough. Tracy goes on a tirade about movies today. (They showed clips of Maltin's TCM Interview with Tracy/Beatty from 2009)
Did anyone watch this? Scary! What were they thinking??? ************************************************
Found this article. Better said than me.

That really was strange. Hard to imagine how that whole thing came about.

Darn, I missed it. I got sidetracked with another project. I hope it re-aires; I don't have On Demand and it's not included in Watch Tcm. Maybe someday it will show up on Underground.

Here is my playlist for this video and the one Leonard Maltin did in 2009. That one has an Intro by Robert Osborne.
I thought it was pretty painful so watch at your own risk!

I missed it too. But it appears I really didn't miss anything much.

Unfortunately, I only saw this thread after the segment aired, but I did watch the 2009 interview and WTF is the only thing that comes to mind.

From what I can ascertain, in it's simplest form, it's all about Warren Beatty retaining the rights to Dick Tracy by doing these little projects.

I once saw him in person being interviewed after a screening of one of his films. I think he's, well, just on a different wave length than most people.

Wow. I feel like I did the day after Trilogy of Terror aired and I was the only one on the planet not to have watched it.
Thankfully technology now means I get to see this alleged 'trainwreck' right away and of course....
I LOVED IT!! I LOVED IT!! I LOVED IT!!
Thank you yanceycravat for posting it, the links, the article - simply fabulous.
As much as I hate to constantly have to admit it, this is who Warren is...brilliant. D@mn. Cracker-house crazy as a fox. I had hoped to never have to cross paths with him or need to debate his talents again after watching Leslie Caron: The Reluctant Star. To hear her talk about him was devastating, like Rita Moreno and Brando. I know we all need to speak truth to power or some such but I would prefer in both of these cases they just said Warren who? Marlon who? I say this as a feminist and a lover of men.
Did anybody else get this? Like this? I am worried as such a unicorn thinker there is no point in my even posting any reviews or commentary here - I must be crazy and I just don't know it. The worst kind of crazy.

I get what you're saying. He might be playing us all with the act, and that's fine, but really, to what end? Just a power trip?
To "re-up" the copyright he could have played it straight. Maybe it's quaint and maybe I'm naive, but if he is playing us, that didn't strike me as mirthful or "hey come along;" it struck me as arrogant and mocking. I'd almost prefer he's nuts than that nasty.
Regardless - and I fully acknowledge I might just be completely off as I know very, very little about Beatty - I'm glad you post.

Preserving the rights for Dick Tracy does sound like a good explanation for how the show got produced. It does remind me of the Fantastic Four movie that Roger Corman did in 1994 for similar reasons.
I looked back in my records and the brief scene of Ben interviewing Warren Beatty (with the discussion of "collaboration") was from an introduction for the film Reds (1981) that was shown on TCM back on January 4, 2017. At the time, Beatty was promoting his film Rules Don’t Apply (2016).

I can't finish it, mainly because I just do not like BM, but by the first few minutes it reminds me of those videos corporate execs make to show at annual plan meetings, acting poorly, thinking they're cute, but really just coming off as corny. This is one of those ideas that probably sounded good in discussion, but lost a lot in execution.
I have noticed over the years that Beatty likes to act as though he's being self-deprecating when really he's just being self-indulgent.
