That's a sugar cube and a dash of bitters that the bartender put in the champagne cocktail (plus a lemon twist). A lot of times, in movies, they don't actually make them right. Neat to see it done correctly in a movie.

Irene has such a sweet teasing manner with her co-stars. I love this movie with the ever-ladylike Deborah Kerr but Irene is putting more humor in it.

I love this sequence where they go ashore, and visit his grandmother

The grandmother is Maria Ouspenskaya, one of the golden era's go-to grandmothers. She's such a pro.

Maria Ouspenskaya, who plays the grandmother, only has about ten minutes of screen time in this movie...but she managed to get a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

Katharine Hepburn was between BRINGING UP BABY and THE PHILADELPHIA STORY in 1939.
She would play the grandmother in the 1994 remake with Warren Beatty & Annette Bening. It would be Hepburn's last feature film appearance.

Maria Ouspenskaya is in "DodSworth," too. One of my favorite films.

The chapel scene is wonderful. Director Leo McCarey's Catholicism comes through in the directing of this scene.

I love that scene too. As a devout agnostic, I love when Hollywood didn't get weak in the knees doing a sincere religious scene.

One more on the dress, the tailoring is incredible. My girlfriend would kill for a fit like that.

Ouspenskaya defies miscasting (a Russian actress playing a French woman) and gives us a sincere gem of a performance.
The piano playing scene is so touching it brings tears to my eyes.
