Burt Bacharach was interviewed at the Library of Congress in May of 2012 when he and songwriting partner Hal David were awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. He talked about his career since the early 1960s, when he first teamed with David, and the songwriting, film scoring, and recording processes.
At about the 19 minute mark, he is asked briefly about his classical training, but my favorite anecdote about that era is not in this interview, so I'll pass it on here. While studying with French composer Darius Milhaud in the summer of 1947, a time when most young composers were writing dissonant or atonal works, Burt brought a sonatina to Milhaud and felt sheepish that it contained a pleasant melody. "Burt," Milhaud said, "never ever feel embarrassed or discomforted by a melody people can remember or whistle."

Thanks for sharing that anecdote not in the interview. It says so much. He mentioned Ron Isley specifically and even though I posted a clip on another thread I thought I'd post this here.

CBA Sunday Morning just showed this segment, which includes your anecdote. Guys like Burt make composition look so easy. I like Jonathan Tunick's quote in that piece. "Writing music is a bitch."

Fee Waybill really enjoyed Bacharach's composition. So much so that it lead to Fee having a major dispute with an "underground" German music producer. Fee had live recordings of one of The Tubes European tours and was working with this producer to release this music. The band performed a Bacharach song. Well the producer just laughed at paying any royalties to any composures for use of their songs. I was with Fee when he was taking to this producer and when he got off the phone he said "that X&!YZ doesn't even wish to pay Bacharach,,,, I live in the same town as him, I'm not going to cheat a fellow songwriter!!". Fee killed the deal asking for the tapes back.

Aside from being unethical it would have been bad business. If Burt had heard about it, he would have had a slam dunk lawsuit. Do you remember which song it was?
