Lydia Mendoza (1916-2007) -- The Mother of Tejano Music
Mendoza was musical even as a toddler. She twice retired and twice returned to the stage, then at the age of 82 a stroke forced her to retire permanently.
Mendoza was honored numerous times with grants, induction into numerous halls of fame, performed at the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter, and had her likeness featured on a US postage stamp in 2013, the first in the Music Icons series.
Her signature song, "Mal Hombre"

I had hoped more footage might surface but alas I can find none. That CBC vault is very hard to access. I hate to reduce this woman to a partial clip and a death reel.
Eleanor Collins was invited by CBC to star in The Eleanor Show, that ran from June 19 to September 11,1955, making her the first woman, the first person of colour, and the first jazz singer to headline a show on national TV, predating the Nat King Cole Show.
