This is fabulous. How do I not even know Sissieretta Jones or Zitkála-Šá? This spurs me on to continue my search for a copy of the Portia White: Think On Me (2000) documentary.

Sissieretta Jones -- what a great name -- must have been one amazing woman. I like this little snippet from the Carnegie Hall historian.

I was considering starting a thread, but this will serve as well.
Last night on PBS was the presentation of Joni Mitchell receiving the Gershwin prize for popular song. And talk about an inspiration. Not just for women, but anybody with the desire to express themselves through art. Be it musical, literary or painting, Joni overcame many personal artistic and relationship setbacks to become one of the premier songwriters of her and other generations. Overcoming also health problems(including a brain aneurysm) to still be present for the reception of this long overdue distinctive award. She even mustered up the will and energy to perform this Gershwin tune at the ceremony.
Recorded on an audience member's phone, he apologized for his phone dying before the conclusion.
Joni has written so many well known and Iconic songs, and most of them, iconic or not, were filled with so many well descriptive visual images it was certain she not only painted with oils, but with words as well. As in this long favorite(among many) of mine.............
Damn! If you don't like that, you've got no soul!

Caitlin Clark: This young woman has scored over 40 points in two games (the big-8 game and last night 41 in the final-4).
There are many fine basketball players in women's basketball, Caitlin just happens to be the best college one at this time.

Rhiannon Giddens is a huge talent. She studied opera, is wonderful at Gaelic lilting, is a multi-instrumentalist, a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Carolina Chocolate Drops, serves as creative director of Silkroads (having taken the post when the founder, Yo-Yo Ma, stepped down), and she's won a gang of Grammys. Giddens is especially interested in the history and development of the banjo. Pretty sure there's nothing she couldn't do.

I better mention Angel Reese, otherwise I'll be known as a hater, or even worst. Joking (well kind of): Reese is a solid player but appears to be a little confused as it relates to trash talking.

And let's go back(for a sec) to the musical aspect of this thread, after all, IN a music forum page, to another inspiring woman musician.

And let's go back(for a sec) to the musical aspect of this thread, after all, IN a music forum page, to another inspiring woman musician. Sepiatone Well, if one is going to get technical, this thread is about woman that inspired others, musically. Therefore, only musicians who were inspired by a woman musician should be posting. I know you play some-guitar. Can you really say Patrice Rushen inspired you, musically? Now I can, since I saw her with Lee Ritenour, many times when we were all in our 20s, had some good talks with her, and Lee, Patrice and that Captain Fingers band were one of my inspirations for getting into jazz and learning to become a jazz musician. (I even got to assist the percussionist, since I was always sitting in the front, and he had many gadgets (like bottles, and other household items he would play), and I was in charge of handing them out to him. This was at The Bake Potato in West Hollywood. PS: I'm just pulling your leg here as it relates to what to post, since I assume no one here is taking the term "inspired" as literally as I did above. All in fun, son.

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou -- (12 December 1923 – 26 March 2023)
Guèbrou, the nun known as Ethiopia's Piano Queen, died last week at the age of 99. Her compositions are delightful beyond all reason, and I am completely obsessed with her music. May angels sing thee, dear lady.
Here's an article about her: www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65100892
