I was watching the Golden Globes and was interested to see that Mike White won a few awards for The White Lotus, which I have never seen. I remember Mike White from Chuck & Buck, one of the most uncomfortable-making gay-themed movies I have ever seen. A friend showed me the film, many years ago, and a couple of times I felt like running out of the room. It's a good film, though, and ends well, despite the excruciating bits.

I've never seen it, so thanks for posting this. I've watched both seasons of The White Lotus and White seems to be exceptionally good at creating uncomfortable situations and mining them for humor and for dramatic payoffs. What I especially like is that he doesn't fall into the trap of making the gay characters the heroes; all of the characters are complex and unpredictable, even when he wrote for himself as Jack Black's needy roommate in School of Rock. (As an aside, Joan Cusack saying "It appears we've lost your children" to her students' parents is one of my favorite one-liners ever.) The White Lotus has made me much more curious about him, so I'll use your suggestion as a starting point. It's interesting that The Golden Globes triggered your memory; he's so sweet and funny on award shows, but there's obviously so much more going on with this guy.
