Awww..... Ralphy's Mom?
She was also great in smaller parts in ABSENCE OF MALICE and SLAPSHOT.
And of course, her role in A CHRISTMAS STORY.
Rest In Peace, Mel.

Melinda originated the role of Honey, the biology professor's wife, in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), well before her movie career took off. She was nominated for a Tony but didn't win. A fine actress. R.I.P.

Bound for Glory (1976) with David Carradine was one of my favorites, though I agree that Ralphie's mom was unforgettable.

Looking into things I discovered she passed near a month ago. I don't recall hearing anything about it and I'm usually tuned into the Evening News, and don't have the time to go over all the earlier pages of the "Death Takes No Holiday" thread. And no cause was offered for her demise. It may have due to a long illness as when Peter Billingsley and Vince Vaughn started the project A Christmas Story Christmas, The actual sequel to the original movie, cast Julie Hagerty as Ralphie's Mom. So I'm assuming Melinda might have been too ill at the time to take on the role. But Hagerty does a fine job, and the movie has many humorous and touching moments in it. My daughter loaded it onto a flash drive for me and I finally got around to watching it last night.
