I just saw a promo for Mel Brooks The History of the World Part II. It will be a series on Hulu starting March 6. Imdb lists 8 parts for this series.
Honestly, the trailer didn't look that funny but you never know. Mel Brooks is 96.

Triangle of Sadness (2022). Nominated for Best Picture. A satire about class. A male model and his model/ influencer girlfriend get a free luxury cruise. The beautiful couple is broke. The other passengers are rich, mostly older Europeans. There's the Russian who made his fortune in waste management, the Brit who is in weapons manufacturing. You get the idea. There's a gross out scene during the captain's dinner while the boat rolls and turns in a storm. Things go downhill from there which turns the class system on its head. The final chapter went too far for me. Woody Harrelson has a supporting role as the ship's boozy captain.
People seem to either love or hate it. I hated it.

It looks like TOP GUN MAVERICK was reviewers' favorite. It was the most crowd friendly, old school, see it on the big screen, popcorn movie of the bunch.

Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields. A two part documentary about the career of the model/actress. Includes interviews with Shields herself as well as childhood friend Laura Linney. Anyone of a certain age remembers how ubiquitous she was in the late 1970s and all through the 1980s. The documentary covers her relationship with her driven, alcoholic mother/manager. Her parents were divorced, her father remarried and had a more children. They didn't seem to see much of each of other. Shields sexualized data young age in ads like the famous " Nothing comes between me and my Calvin Klein jeans " and movies like Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love. There are talking heads blaming Hollywood and "straight white men" but her mother was the one allowing her to participate in these depictions. It's hard to image anyone having that kind of career at such a young age. Interesting watch.

I see by perusing the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes I am not the only who has taken a fancy to The Great: An Occasionally True Story. I've only seen the first season thus far but quite enjoyed it. It is nice to see two child actors making making it through to the adult realm. Fair warning: there is a great deal of debauchery which apparently is required to have an edgy important show. - It's light-hearted and funny, and right now that's no bad thing.
- The Great is a period romp based on the life of Catherine the Great, but it is not your average period romp as it is lavishly filthy, wonderfully funny, snappily paced, savagely witty and totally modern.
- A refreshing interpretation of royal drama that's great enough to get away with rewriting the story of Catherine The Great.

Poor Things (2023) Emma Stone just won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Bella Baxter. Also won for costume, makeup, and production design. Nominated for best picture, director, cinematography , screenplay.
It's part Frankenstein and part Candide. It's the story of Bella Baxter. She's the creation of Godwin Baxter a Frankenstein-ish doctor whom Bella calls, fittingly, "God." Bella talks in a simple, halting manner and moves awkwardly like a toddler. She has tantrums and smashes plates when she is frustrated. As she evolves, she discovers self-pleasure. She soon goes on a sexual odyssey, aggressively seeking out sexual experiences.
You see a lot of Emma Stone. There's an overdose of sex but it's not really a sexy movie. I've read criticism of the movie showing Bella, basically a child mentally or at least stunted, engaging in acts with older men. The movie presents it as she's seeking out these situations, as an act of sexual revolution or liberation. Bella's origin story, which I won't spoil but is the stuff of horror movies, is part of the issue people are having with her countless sexual situations. The movie ends on a triumphant note, with Bella now fully formed, studying to be a doctor and carrying on in God's footsteps. The movie is very stylized, sort of other worldly yet set in the familiar past. If you have seen director Yorgos Lanthimos previous movies like The Lobster or The Favourite also with Emma Stone, you'll have an idea of what oddball movie you are in for.
I was curious about this movie and am glad I saw it. But it joins the other Oscar nominated movies in the recent past that I cannot see myself revisiting.

Anatomy of a Fall (2023) Nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress and won for Best Original Screenplay. In French and English.
After the death of her husband from falling from their home's top floor, his wife Sandra is put on trial for murder. Their son is in the courtroom sitting with a court assigned guardian listening to the charges against his mother and to the less than happier side of this parents' marriage. The son, Daniel, is partially blind as a result of an accident for which his father felt responsible. His parents clashed over things that many couples do: money, fidelity, careers, children.
The movie begins in their home with Sandra giving an interview to a pretty college student. The father, Samuel, is not seen but we hear the repetitive, intrusive music he is blasting from the top floor where he is renovating the attic. Sandra tries to continue with her conversation as if there is nothing wrong. Strangely, she does ask her husband to turn own the music. There is clearly tension in the home. The music is so loud that Sandra is forced to cut the interview short. While this is going on, Daniel heads out with the family dog on a walk. When he returns, he discovers his father's body in front of their home. What happened? Was it an accident? Was it suicide? Was he pushed? There is a trial where evidence shows the definite cracks in their marriage. Both Sandra and Daniel testify. The ending might be frustrating to some, hoping for more answers. Viewers may wonder if the testimony and evidence can be trusted.
The movie is well acted especially by Sandra Huller as Sandra and Milo Machado-Graner as Daniel. Honorable mention, Messi as their dog Snoop. The movie was a little long but it kept my attention and I was still thinking about the ending the next day.
(PS-- I posted the song in the Music section that the husband blasts while his wife is being interviewed. It plays a big part of setting the tension in the home for that scene.)
