Included with one of the free channels on Roku. Notorious cult classic. Originally rated X. Directed by Ken Russell, starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave. Historical fiction based on a real 17th century priest accused of witchcraft and a disturbed nun who accuses him of possession. The priest has political power in Loudon, France making him a threat to powerful Cardinal Richelieu and foppish Louis XIII. He is put on trial because of the nun's accusations. It's a visually striking movie, with much of the costumes and interiors in stark contrasting black and white. It is definitely a Ken Russell movie and earned its rated X movie with disturbing violence and an extended orgy scene including naked nuns defiling a large crucifix. Oliver Reed supposedly counted this as his favorite movie.

The Devils would be something to see on the big screen. Did many people leave? My spouse bailed on the movie once things got ... gynecological.

My spouse bailed on the movie once things got ... gynecological. I don't remember, it was so long ago. I doubt it, New Yorkers tend to be broad minded, at the movies anyway! A few years after it first opened, The Devils returned occasionally on a double bill with The Damned.

I saw it at the Capitol Theater in Toronto in 1971 (or maybe it was 72). I was taken aback by the content, but was impressed by the film as well. It definitely didn't bore me.
Redgrave is fascinating in this part - grotesque, yet oddly beautiful. A unique role.
As for Oliver Reed - he never gave a better performance than this one.
It's been very frustrating trying to obtain a complete version of this movie. There's been a lot of resistance to releasing it complete.
I have obtained a DVD version that is the most complete ever - 115 minutes with the usually cut scenes put back in. Also have a second disc of it with commentary throughout.
A very bracing movie - especially for a baby boomer like me who grew up Catholic.
One to "see before you die".
