When I'm asked "Do you have the time?" if I'm in a certain mood I'll reply, "Time for what?" More classic Carlin: Sepiatone

I need to channel my inner George Carlin when young cashiers at the grocery store ask me, "You have any big plans for your day?". What answer do they expect? I realize they were told to ask such an inane question by some corporate genius. " No, this is the highlight of my day."

I realize they were told to ask such an inane question by some corporate genius. " No, this is the highlight of my day." That's actually a nice reply to someone who is just trying to be pleasant, whether they were told to or not. On behalf of everyone who has worked in customer service, or still has the misfortune to, let me ask that you not channel the old and mean George Carlin. I can't listen to him for long into the 1990s.
Still he was a great talent and a very smart man. His interview with Cavett is very enlightening. There is also a 3-hour interview posted by Archive if American Television where he details his life and experiences, which includes his thoughts on the state and stages of American culture and his role in it.

I don't object to exchanging pleasantries with cashiers. I've worked customer service too. But the forced "Got any big plans today?" epidemic is painful.

I realize they were told to ask such an inane question by some corporate genius. " No, this is the highlight of my day." I've never(yet) been asked that by a cashier. But I too like to have fun with those folks now and then. For instance, when checking out I'm often asked, "Any bottle returns, Meijer rewards, coin slips, coupons?" And I'll sometimes answer, "No thanks." And often(as you know too probably) when leaving they'll usually say, "Have a good one." To which I reply; "I'll try for two!" Sepiatone

Nice! My favorite recent cashier exchange happened right before Christmas. It was a friendly young kid, must have been new, never seen him before. He said,"I like the beginning of the holidays because everyone is so friendly. But now they're just @ssholes. " I laughed and nodded.
