I don't know why, but I always liked Sally Jessy Raphael's show. I just found her kind of unique AND more relatable than other hosts. But of course, the first one I remember watching as a kid was Donahue.
What's your favorite talk show?

The daytime shows weren't really for me but I did watch a lot of Donohue. He was an engaging sort and often had interesting guests even if his own biases were part of the topic.
I really enjoyed the late night show Later with Bob Costas, from 1988 to 1994. He interviewed one guest per episode, usually but not always from the entertainment world, and they were often people who didn't give interviews frequently. They weren't just the latest celeb making the talk show rounds. And if was about the guest, not Costas, though he was an engaging host who had a natural gift for smooth-speak.
I even liked in the unusual set, like a super kitschy den.

As a kid talk shows were too "talky" for me and I had no interest. But one of the earliest ones I can remember seeing was one my Mom used to like to watch during the day.....
Virginia Graham had a few shows, basically all the same but with different names. "Food For Thought" from 1953 to 1957; "Girl Talk" from 1963 to 1969; and "The Virginia Graham show" from 1970 to 1972. ;
But if you're talking "classic" talk shows, and in daytime, I'd go with the old "Merv Griffin" daytime talk show( from 1965-'69), done in typical "desk and chair" set up like late night talk shows were done. Griffin's "sidekick" on that show was Distinguished British actor Arthur Treacher. Would see this familiar guy regularly on the show....
And this icon of TV showed up too.

Not classic, but in the early 90s Vicki Lawrence had a talk show. I remember catching this episode because of the Hollywood Golden Age panel. The picture is not great, but it's Margaret O'Brian, Jane Russell, Virginia Mayo, Dorothy Malone and Dorothy Lamour., May 1993.

Merv Griffin was a fine musician and from time to time he would have first rate jazz cats on his show. E.g. Guitarist Jim Hall.

What was the name of the gravel-voiced bull dog faced trumpeter that played in the band on Merv's show? He was also a barely acceptable actor. You see him in the 60s Dragnet episodes. I always want to call him Jack Weston but I know that's the guy from Mr. Limpet.

Watched Donahue, Dick Cavett and The McLaughlin Report. Such a weird dynamic when he'd bark questions at the panel, "wrong!"

I always got a kick out of Tom Snyder's late night show, Tom acting like a proud recent graduate of the Famous Broadcasters' School. Tom Snyder here on the late night shift out of Studio 2A at NBC headquarters in New York City. Joe Smoe is behind the control board tonight and we've got an interesting show for all you insomniacs. Then there was the oft present ciggy and that weird laugh. Still Tom was pretty funny and he had some guests that didn't often appear on TV talk shows. I'd rather watch one of those gruesome anti-drunk driving PSAs than Merv Griffin. He always seemed to come off as a smarmy sarcastic wise guy who was actually just another show biz creep. Good riddance.

If we are talking Talk Shows proper like SJR I would have to say Donahue. (although to maintain my Canadian citizenship I must also pledge allegiance to Jenny Jones)
If we are talking about the more variety type talks shows, I loved Dinah! You just never knew what kind of mix was going to end up on the show. I've been off watching clips of Iggy, Bowie, Henry Winkler, Nancy Walker Lucy with Carol Burnett, Bob Hope
And Mike Douglas.

I just rewatched the Dinah Show Oscar celebration from 1977.
Olivia de Haviland, Shelley Winters, Shirley Jones, Eva Marie Saint and the fabulous Mr. Osborne!
Shelley was a hoot! Worth multiple viewings.

In the summer of '63, when my step brother was staying with us, we'd flip a coin each night to decide if we watched Johnny Carson's TONIGHT show, or Steve Allen's late night talk show, as we liked both. And Steve was where you could see this........

I saw him a few times playing in clubs in West Hollywood during the 80s and 90s. (and yea, Weston and Sheldon do have a similar look).

Shelley was a hoot! Worth multiple viewings. This reminds me of the great clip of Shelley Winters and Oliver Reed on Carson. I was truly frightened for her - made me sweat bullets.

OMG! Thank you, that's hysterical!
A coworker use to work for Bank of New York Private Wealth Management.
Shelley was a client. Apparently she went on several talk shows, tipsy, and would bad mouth their performance and how they lost her money.
They were always terrified when she was scheduled for a show!
