I just got the chance to watch this film today and this scene was my favorite. I love how Gish's character starts singing as well, as if trying to drown out the evil of Mitchum's character's siren song. The moment when he disappears when the candle goes out actually made me gasp aloud when I saw it.

I love the scene when Fonda does the walking demo and it is much longer than expected, then suddenly they turn and face Lee J Cobb alone — an effective moment (I love all of it though)
