The only Humbug I can find is a kind of hard candy or a definition describing the word as referring to a fraud or other kind of hoax. humbug Also found in: Thesaurus, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia. hum·bug (hŭm′bŭg′) n. 1. Something intended to deceive; a hoax or fraud. 2. A person who claims to be other than what he or she is; an impostor. 3. Nonsense; rubbish. 4. Pretense; deception. Sepiatone

It was a Jules Feiffer drawing of The Humbug from The Phantom Tollbooth. I appear to be completely incapable while using this forum of successfully being able to make anyone else see it. Sorry.

Odd that the Wizard of Oz would describe himself as an insect species, but then, it was a painful confession.

Really, all my searching reveals there really isn't an actual insect called a humbug. The word is just a figure of speech. To whit: The word IS in fact, a humbug! Sepiatone
