In the classical music world there is only one. If for some reason the name means nothing to you it's Leonard Bernstein, pianist, composer, conductor, educator and legend. I wish there was a figure like him on the scene now. He did live in a different world, certainly a different America - one that honored, not merely tolerated, or willingly ignored classical music. At any rate, I loved this conversation he had on behalf of the Kennedy Center which honored him with a lifetime achievement award:

I've always found this to be incredibly poignant. I have a copy of Bernstein conducting Candide in its entirety but haven't sat down to listen to it. Thank You for the reminder.

Bernstein is loved by many jazz musicians since he helped break down some of the barriers and had great respect for jazz and those that played it.

I used to like his "Young people's concerts" on TV in the '60's. This is from one show in which he broke down several popular rock'n'roll tunes pointing out the connections to them and long used classical and symphonic principles used in their constructions.

I think this thread deserves bumping and I'll do it by providing one of my favorite movie scores by him.

Here are a couple of Bernstein songs from musical theater that demonstrate how Bernstein merges both musical worlds: "The Wrong Note Rag" from Wonderful Town; and "I Am Easily Assimilated" from Candide (conducted by Bernstein).
