This doc played last night and I got an answer to something which mystified me for years.
I moved around a lot in the Northeast and Midwest. I managed to find friends with the same enthusiasm for films. In discussions of who is your favorite actress? no one I knew ever said Garbo. Yet any program about the studio era, Garbo seemed to be related as the star everyone loved and admired.
According to this doc, Garbo's audience was the European market-that foreign market much more than domestic generated the bucks. Interesting why she went to Mayer to end her contract during WWII. I won't spoil the doc by revealing here.
Also was the theory provided that men from small towns didn't like her and that the press was more interested in her than the American public.
I almost didn't watch it, because same as my friends, she wasn't at the top of my favorite actresses list. But seeing that it was a recent doc, I watched hoping for a more unbiased program. Some of the people interviewed were relatives.
I can recommend it. How she manipulates Mayer is worth the view.
